Newbie Questions

Hi there --

So I just ordered the "Complete Pack" version of the game. I'm a Crusades Military History buff and got super excited about it after reading a couple of epic AARs.

I will probably have many more questions as I start to play, but my main concern at the moment though is to make sure I am playing the best version available as of March 2010. By this I mean the best AI and tweaks/updates available.

I'm not sure when the "Complete Pack" was released; sometime in 2008 I believe. Are there any patches/improvement mods I should be aware of?

Well nothing official has been done to the game since October 2008, when the latest beta-patch was released. You would definitely want to get that one!!

As for mods, there are two major mods around that are still being updated:

TASS (by Veld)

DVIP (by jordarkelf)

Check both out and select the one you prefer. Just remember that they are not compatible with each other, so you need a copy of CK-DV for each mod. Sine PI games do not use the windows registry database, you can just install the game, patch it, and then take all the copies of the whole CK folder you need for various mods.

As for brilliant AI .... you need to look elsewhere .... the AI sucks in CK. But since CK is not about combat and tactics, it doesn't matter so much ... it is more a dynasty role-playing game of sorts, where the important thing is handling your family and make sure that future generations will have something to rule.

I think it's just 2.0, doesn't include beta patches (if 2.1 ever goes from beta to just 2.1, it might be included in the downloads from then on).

I do believe that CK Complete comes with the beta ... but it is the one from June, not October, so he needs to patch anyways

So just installed the game on my comp, but there is no manual that comes with the Complete Pack, hence no registration key. Does anyone know how I can register with Paradox that I have the game?

The manual can be found on the CD as a pdf-file (it is in a separate folder called 'manual')

There is no registration-key for CK Complete, only a key for people who have bought Deus Vult at Gamersgate.


Besides giving you a DV-icon, having the game registered doesn't give you any other benefits.

Hey -- the patch doesn't work for me. I unzip the file and double click on crusaders.exe and it automatically extracts for a short time then just comes up with an error message that says "Critical error! excel file not found"..anyone know the meaning of this?

Did you extract it into the "Crusader Kings" main folder? It's not an installer, just overwrite all the old files.
