Hi,

Two weeks ago, I've bought and installed a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS sound card.
Today, I've tried to launch HOI2 for the fisrt time since the hardware installation and I have no sound anymore (before everything was fine).
Futhermore, I can play the game but when I Quit (the action on clicking on the 'Quit' button), the PC freezes and I must reboot.
Concerning the sound, everything is ok with all my other games (so far ...); and I can read all the MP3s included in the directory /music with all my MP3 players.
I've also reinstalled the game ....

This is some information about my config :

Game Version & Patch (incl. publisher):
problem encountered on v1.1, v1.2 and v1.3a of HOI2
OS & build/SP:
Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2
Computer, CPU & speed:
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3400+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.4GHz
RAM:
1024MB RAM
Free HDD space:
6 Go
Video (brand, model, driver, memory):
ATI 9700 PRo 128Mo Omegadrivers v2.6.71
Sound (brand, model, driver):
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS
DirectX Version:
DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

So, .... does anybody has the same problem with this card ?
What can I do :(
Please, help : I love HOI2 music so much

It does appear there is a conflict between your new sound card, it's driver, directX and the game (or any combination thereof).

Have you re-installed directX after installing the new sound card + driver? Has the driver from your previous card been completely de-installed?

It may be a good idea. I'll try tonight and re-post my conclusions.

Ok. We await your result. ;)

There is one more thing we could try here (apart from the very drastic measure of a complete OS re-install), and that is to reduce the hardware accelleration level for the sound blaster. That at least will rule out if (or indeed if not) the issue is caused by the creative driver.

Start dxdiag, select the sound tab page, and reduce the accelleration level with the slider. Most likely you will have to reboot after doing this.

That sounds good.
I'll try as soon as a I can, because now it's time for holiday ....
I'll give my results here.
Thanks !

Ok. Keep us updated. ;)

That last one is odd. Didn't you get a startup error (with the creative drivers disabled) about no sound being available? Because, with the sound drivers disabled, there should (for all intends and purposes) no longer be an installed sound solution visible to both DirectX and the game.

If you didn't get such a message, then chances are your old sound card's drivers are still lurking around somewhere and interfering with the drivers for your new card.

No, I don't have any startup error, and the bug resides even with no acceleration in dxdiag.
This is what I have in my dxdiag when I choose "No hardware acceleration" (the panel is in french ... sorry).
dxdiag.jpg

What I notice is although no drivers are selected (on the right side), the card "emules" ..... something.
Any ideas ?

It seems there is still something installed and active, given the fact that the driver manufacturer is listed as Creative.

Try uninstalling your Creative driver set alltogether, and reboot. When Windows then detects new hardware, skip the installation procedure.

The run dxsetup to update directX and reboot again. After that, run dxdiag again. If all went well, dxdiag should no longer be able to detect any sound device and/or driver.

If that is the case, you can run the Creative setup procedure to re-install the sound drivers.

I also have a Creative XiFi board that I installed a couple weeks ago in a similarly equipped PC (except for video card, an NVIDIA 6800 GS). However, I have had no problems with either sound effects or music in it. Here some snippets from my DxDiag report.

Forgot to mention that I have the ExtremeMusic version of that sound card, not the FPS.

The problem looks to be with the Driver and not the board. ;)

I've done everything you've said .... but nothing changed
This is what I have after Creative drivers uninstallation :
Full acceleration

No acceleration

So ... I re-installed Creative drivers and it's all same as before (concerning dxdiag and game freezing).

@Bobarossa : reassured to know that it works for others Creative X-fi ...

Nota : This is what I have when drivers are desactived

In that case HOI2 refuses to launch.

Ok. that last bit is what I actually expected to happen. No sound driver = no hoi2 launch.

Now that the creative stuff is fully deinstalled, we can start rebuilding. Pop the creative driver CD into your drive, and this time let it install the drivers only. Not the full software package that Creative supplies. After all, we want to pinpoint the problems at this time ;)

It is already done .... :(
I used the lastest drivers downloaded from Creative site support. Those drivers are the same as Bobarossa (29/10/2005).
And nothing has changed. Same dxdiag (with Creative name displayed with no hardware acceleration) and same bug ....

A work around for you is to play the music in Winamp in the background.

Also make sure you have nothing else running in the back gound that might be using the sound card, also make sure you have renamed the AVI folder to AVI_back, that will ensure the Bink player is not causing conflicts.

Problem solved !

THANK YOU !
You were right  It seems there was a conflit between HOI2 and the Creative program named "Volume Panel" (VolPanel.exe) launched at Windows startup.
Now that I have the solution, it seems trivial but I took a long time to get it.
So, hope it'll help some others Creative X-Fi owners, and thank you very much for your help and patience (expecially jpd ... :) )

Glad we could help.
