I recently upgraded my system and when I tried playing EU 2, I noticed a most peculiar thing: most of the sfx work only once. For example I'd hear the 'click' when I clicked on a province for the first time - silence if I click on any province thereafter. Same with battles, ordering new units, victory and defeat sfx - they all happen just once. I have to exit EU 2 to hear them play just once again- if I reload the game from within EU2, it's "silent" from the start. Any idea what this might be? It is definitely not a patch issue - happens both under 1.05 and 1.06.
One thing: my computer upgrade involved a new Asus motherboard with onboard network and audio cards. I had to install an audio card anyway (Soundblaster PCI, pretty standard) because the motherboard's onboard audio card couldn't be activated under Windows 98 (I use W 98 SE). I've already fiddled with the sound card panel making sure it doesn't share an IRQ with anything, and is as compatible with everything in existence as only possible.
I haven't experienced any audio problems following the upgrade with any of my other games. But I like EU 2 a lot, and although it doesn't crash (well, from time to time upon quitting the game it does a CTD) and is still playable, the lack of these sound effects really detracts from the gaming experience (silent battles!).
I've already tried everything I could think of short of re-installing Windows (but I did run Norton WinDoctor along with other diagnostics). Everything appears to be fine. Would you have any suggestions? Please help if you can.
One thing: before the upgrade, the game loading screen (with the four head sculptures) always showed Intializing Sound in the progress bar at the bottom of the screen. Then it moved to Intializing Graphics, and so on. Now, whenever the game loading screen appears the progress bar is halfway across and it's already at Initializing Graphics. I put it down to the fact that I have a much faster system now, but maybe? Maybe? You tell me.
