Welcome Fellow gamers What follows is an AAR for my first grand campaign with version 1.1 on default setting as Germany.

My first thought is this is not a sequel to HOI but an entirely new game.
I began my preperation by reading the manual front to back and playing the
tutorials.

Given the newness of the game I decided to play very carefully and not get involved in a war before the date of my choosing. (to skip to middle that ended up being Sept of 45!) My primary focus was the maximizing the economy; thus I chose ministers that reduced consumuer demands or military supply. In addition I grouped my armies so that I could put them under the command of leaders with the logicisticts trait. Finally I moved my govt tab one to the left for a more open society to better assist economic growth.
The net result of this was Cash and lots of it, though I had to put up with great War deminstrations every so often but given the high out-put of consumer goods the dissent didn't last long.

I set up serial runs for convoys escorts and transports (I thought at the time I would be doing a lot of overseas warfare) I had over 390 convoys by 45.
I spent the rest of my efforts on technology. I wont go into the details but I spent most of my efforts on improving my industry and items related to technology.

A note on research - They are not kidding about researching techs before there time. Try developing a tech two years before its time and it takes forever- Your team could research 3 techs in the time it would take to get something way early.

Well to make a long story shorter I more or less followed the historical pattern but made no deals with the russians and backed down against the Poles. I began to upgrade my military in ernest by 39 various serial runs of inf arm and art brg. and the occaisional HQ.

A funny thing happened - no one attacted and with all the extra money I have fairly good relations with every one considering. In fact Japan never attacted the usa!

Well you may say how can you win? By looking at the victory point total I have decided to leave the ussr well enough alone and take just enough victory points to edge out the allies. Given this is the first go around with the grand camp there are many things in the diplomatic field I could have done differently but I does seem that you could achieve victory with out getting envolved in a full blown war. Given I know the cut off time Dec of 47 my military camp is planned for a short sprint to the finish line. I hope to keep the usa and russia completely out of the war. I'll let you all know how this path ended up in my next post.

'I rather be lucky than good'

Well, I set up my forces to attack Poland but at the last second members of my political party quietly suggested that an invasion into the balkans might secure more resources without really getting the allies involved. So I will play the rest of the camp tonight and post tomorrow. Thanks for the interest

Well I asked Japan, Italy and Spain I even asked beligum early on. If I had it to do over I would have worked much harder on getting others to join, but as you're playing the game it gets a bit discouraging to be continually refused. Certianly HOI2 offers many more diplomatic options and I'm still learning them. Thanks for your question.

Off the trodden Path a German AAR pt. 2

Ah Well the best laid plans of mice and men....When we left off I had changed my invasion plans from Poland to Hungry, Romaina and Bulgaria. With the grand plan to achieve win the grand camp by out pointing the alies and ussr.

In fairness to myself I went back to my last saved game(more on this in a moment) Mid June and proceeded from there with my southern invasion plans.
Now with mostly year 45 techs I will not bore you with the cake walk it is to take out Hungry. The most frustrating point is that I had to wait 5 days for my diplomat to deliver my peace terms. Hungry joined the axis 7 days after we crossed the border. Late June as I recall

Romania was more of the same but given the size of the country they didn't realize the war was lost for at least 5 days. Given that I had reorginize my forces after Hungry and refit a few dinged up units. Romania joined the Axis in late July.

Now lets discuss this fly speck of country Bulgaria. Up to this point my enemies couldn't surrender fast enough. What I learned in Bulgaria is that Mountain troops do have there uses. Though I had overwhelming advantages in size and tech I had failed to build an Mt. divisions and my Panthers where not well suited to the narrow mountain passes. Word to the wise don't drive a river crossing into a mountains unless the have those Mt. divisions you might be in for a nasty surprise. Now two weeks into the attack Bulgaria refused my generous peace offer even though all they had left was thier Capital.........

And here's where the plans of mice and men comes in....."Windows has encounter a problem with HOI2 and will need to shut down the program"
GGGGRRRRRRRR I was one week away from my auto save and all off my hard work had been lost. Thus fair reader I will need to retrace my steps and report back again tomorrow.

In the big picture of this low scale War it became clear that I would have to keep the US out of the war and by extention keep Japan from attacking the US. My plan for this has worked by trading for oil from Persia and giving it away to Japan. Thus keeping Japan's industry going and hopefully preventing a war from breaking out. With out this free trade, Japan will bring the US into war and nearly double the size of the Alies.

Tonight I will retrace my actions and save monthly and possibly place 30 divisions on Bulgaria's border and then ask 'nicely' if they want to join the axis (before I beat them to a pulp). Up to this point no one seems to want to join my 'club' until I beat them over the head with it. Up next Yugoslavia.
