Not to be offensive, but, if this was me, I'd have links ready.

Good for you, but I didn't say it was impossible to find this information, I said we don't speak for Steam, and any information you get here will be 2nd hand at best. Someone had already suggested the user contact Steam support in his thread, and he'd already done so before me and AndrewT made our posts.

Sure, you can find better deals for some games elsewhere, but when you buy EUIV from Amazon, you're still going to need Steam to install it. If you buy EUIV from Steam, you're not going to need some Amazon client, it's inherently advantageous.

Earlier in this thread we discussed how Steam interacts with the Paradox Interactive games.
We came to the conclusion that Steam itself is only used as a normal Installer without Steams DRM being used. (you can start the game outside of steam and can make a backup of the folder itself).
But it's easy to miss those things when your trying to make a point, right? :)

So to sum things up :
1) Steam acts only as a Installer, nothing more, no DRM.
2) You have a wide variety of stores to pick your game key up.
3) Once you downloaded the game you do -not- need steam anymore.
3a) you can start the game from the folder, no steam used.
3b) you can back up the game by simply zipping the folder and later just unzipping it somewhere and starting it from said folder.

That kind of leads me to believe that those who are claiming that "Steam is the all-Evil" *makes spooky hands* simply are misinformed.
All their main points that have been brought up have been proven to be false, as summed up above, the sky isn't falling, honest :)

My only problem is that I don't want Steam installed on my computer at all whatsoever. So that puts me in a bit of a bind.

Then treat steam as a simple installer, install steam to install the game, then uninstall steam and keep the game folder.
Its how other game instalelrs work aswell, even the earlier mentioned GoG installer has to be downloaded onto your computer to install the game, afterwhich you can delete the installer exe file :)

I might actually consider this. Might. :)

Found this in another thread

We don't use Steams DRM currently, and EUIV will be available at all other big portals, but you will only buy a Steam activation code.

Since this seems to have become "The Steam Thread of the Week" I'm wondering if this can be confirmed? That EU IV will actually be available at other online portals? That you only need Steam for the activation code?

It has been confirmed that you can buy the codes from other places, yes. Naturally you will still need Steam to install the game.

Sigh. One more time: PDS games (eg CK2, EU3) do NOT need the Steam client to be running to play. So you sign into Steam on one machine, install the game, sign out, sign in on the other and do the same. Then you're done, you can then run the game on both PCs outside Steam.

it goes much easier just sign in on one machine then copy the game to machine 2 and you are ready

the best point is that you can buy your game key where you want cause of this i saved 30 bucks for the new simcity

If you want to be extra-super tinfoily, you could install Steam on an old laptop and go to a Starbucks or something to do the initial install/download. Then come home and copy the folder over to your real gaming machine. Not that I've thought about this or anything. ;)

I really can't comprehend that THIS is what all the fuss is about?

Well the problem is some people think DRM as soon as they see the word "Steam".

Others, simply don't want that particular application installed on their computer. I happen to be one of "those people", so needless to say I've missed out on a lot of games that are "Steam required".

Well i am assuming you have your CK2 for instance through GamersGate right?
You had to download the installer from there aswell, or am i wrong? (I dont have CK2 through GG, but do have other games)

Why dont you treat steam like a simple installer?
Install the game through steam, uninstall steam and regclean steam from your computer.

Yeah. Once I've got the game installed, I can move and copy the folder wherever I like and on any computer. You have made a compelling argument. :)

I tried that (with AoD), and for some reason, after moving it it always crashed (maybe I did something wrong? )

Hmmm... Perhaps it requires something in the registry be modified as well.

If you do that, you can forget about patches, though. You'll need Steam to get them (I'm pretty sure they'll stop uploading .zip versions of them, since streamlining their patching process through Steam was a big part of the reason why they have decided to stop releasing GG versions).

I'll also probably have to give up MP, since I'm pretty sure MP match-making will be integrated to the Steam client.
