Peace problem

I have EU 1.09 UK and I was playing the French in the 30 Years War when I declared war on Lorraine in April 1620. In a short while I had won two battles and was besieging both Lorrainean provinces. I decided to offer Lorraine peace - but it was not possible!

The "Offer Peace" comand was greyed out, and the tooltip told me that I could not offer peace until sometime in 1619 - the year before! I had plenty of diplomats.

What is wrong? Is this a bug or what do you think I have done wrong?

Eventually the Lorraineans tired of the war and offered me peace instead so everything worked out OK, but this was my first war in EU and now I expect trouble next time I need to end a war.

Possible explanations:
Peace offer from Lorraine not responded to;
'Diplomat in transit' - you can only send a diplomat to a nation once in any one month period;
or no diplomats left.

Hmm, I lost one small battle, after which the Lorraineans asked me to cough up with a lot of money for peace. Then my armies rolled over their land and I expected them to be more malleable. So you are saying that my rejection of their initial peace offer made it impossible to make my own offer later?

Isn't it strange that the system tells me that I cannot make any offers until 1619 when this happened in 1620?

If you rejected, rather than ignored their offer, it shouldn't be a problem.

Yes, I am sure I rejected the offer. I think the button used the word "Decline".

You DoW'ed in April - how soon before you offered peace?

BTW the setting of an impossible date for your next peace offer is just an easy way of programming it to be impossible.

I have forgotten exactly how long before I offered peace, but I reckon a couple of months because I had to built one new unit and I moved another from Languedoc to Lorraine. Here they fought down the Lorrainean army, and while besieging the fortress they had to battle two more small Lorreinean forces sent to disrupt them - one was a new unit, and the other were the remnants of the previous battle.

I agree that setting an impossible date is way to make something impossible, but why should this be impossible, and why not choose, say, year 9999 instead?

This usually happens when you have a "peace proposal" message sitting there unanswered by you.
Go to Menu/option/message settings and set the messages to appear as Pop Ups - otherwise they just appear as an icon in the top right corner and are easily missed.

I was aware of these small icons in the upper right corner, but OK, I shall change my options so that there can be no misunderstanding in the future.
