Here is what I've gathered in a search on the forums :

Once a colony becomes a city, it cannot revert back to colony through population lost by negative growth.

The pop growth "location" malus is reduced by 5% when a city reach 1000 pop.
The pop growth "location" malus becomes 0 when the city reach 5000 pop.

The population growth % is really a gain/loss over a 10 years period.

Remaining natives are incorporated once the colony reach 601 pop.
Colony becomes a city once it reaches 700 pop.

Is all the above correct ?

Does anobody know how I can get the "location" malus from the configuration files ? It seems this it comes from a mixing of different values :-(
Or did anybody made a spreadsheet of all the provinces with this information included ?

After checking, the malus reduction when you reach a pop of 1000 is 4%. (At least, -14 becomes -10 and -10 becomes -6)

Other factors improving pop growth :

Province is a center of trade : +5
Province is next to a center of trade : +2
There is a manufactory in the province : +2

Province is colony- +5%

shitload of negative ones. Siege, occupation, plundering soldiers,

Think I got most if not even all of those in my lists at the beta FAQ page. Check it out.

The pop growth "location" malus is reduced by 5% when a city reach 1000 pop.

This varies extecivly from colony to colony in for instance Africa.

The pop growth "location" malus becomes 0 when the city reach 5000 pop.
This is correct.

Generally the negative pop groth in a colony is = to colonization difficoulty in %, however in certain areas (Africa & India at least) it is even more.
And as I said, the breakepoints are different for differet provinces. I have not yet succeded in pinpointing the factors though.

Can somebody here explane why islands grow faster than mainland provinces when both have the same growth rate. For example Isle Royale and Nova Scotia. Both have same growth rate, but when I place a colony on both at the same time Nova Scotia does not grow beyond 150 while Isle Royale reaches 700 and incorporates the natives.

Can somebody explane that? Or is it a bug?

I also noticed Isle Royale phenomenon but it doesn't seem to apply to other islands, well at least not to all of them. In one game I had colonies in Micmac and at St Helena established at pretty much the same time and they were growing at similar pace.
