Hi,

I've just tried moving EU2 from my old desktop to my new laptop. Because my original installation CD does not seem to work, I wrote the programme onto a RW CD and copied it across to my laptop, which I suspect is the problem.
When I try to load the game, either by using the shortcut or the original eu2.exe, I simply get the message "Europa Universalis II has stopped working; Windows is searching for a solution to the problem."

I have an AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-62 2.10 GHz processor, with 4GB RAM, running on Windows Vista Home Premium.

Looking over some of the other threads, I've tried the solutions suggested there - re-naming my AVI folder, changing to 16-bit colour, and running in XP compatability mode, but nothing helps.

Un-installing and re-installing cleanly from disc would seem to be the most obvious solution, but as I said, my original CD is not working. Is there anything else you could suggest?

Thanks.

So you copied a working installation on your desktop, onto a CD, then from there into your laptop? Just a simple file and directory copy?

That should basically have worked. Do check that no files or directories that you copied are now flagged Read Only, that can happen when you copy from CD.

What goes wrong with the EU2 CD? Could it just need cleaning?

Yeah, that's all, just a simple copy. Perhaps there was a problem when I made the copy from my desktop. I'll check for the read-only issue as well. I'm going to try buying some CD cleaning products for my original EU2 CD to see if that works. At the moment it just freezes on the auto-run menu or if I try to explore the disk with windows explorer. It installed 'Crown of the North' fine though, so it's not a totally lost cause.

Thanks for the advice - turns out all the files had been copied as read-only, so no wonder the game couldn't load. I wish windows had told me. Ah, well. Lesson learnt.

Thanks again, all working perfectly now.
