Problem with Armageddon 1.2

Hi,

I am trying to play armageddon on my laptop (Hp pavillion, Dual Core, 1gb Ram, win XP pro with all service packs), but the game won't start. I manage to get up to the screen where you pick the scenario, but once i click to start, the screen goes black and i get the usual win xp error message (where you are asked whether to send an error report to microsoft).

Now the funny thing is that i don't have any problem running armageddon without the patch.

Of course i have completely uninstalled HOI (followed the instructions in the relevant thread in this forum) and tried to install it again, but same prob...

edit: of course i install armageddon over doomsday and then install the 1.2 patch

edit2: i install patch 1.1 and it works fine... then again 1.2 and it doesn't...

What should I do?

This is a pretty common problem, I spent a minute or two looking for a similar thread but couldn't find you myself, you may be able to.

I know the first thing you need to do, on any Paradox game is to rename the avi folder to avi.old. The Bink player that the Intro movie plays on causes some problems. I know this has fixed the problem for some people.

sbr is correct rename the AVI folder or update your codecs so they have all the latest stuff. Also make sure you have the latest video drivers installed.

just for the record, I was having the exact same problem as the OP and simply renaming the avi folder to avi_old solved the problem completely.

Is this really a codec problem or the way outdated binkplay.exe (inside the avi folder) having compatibility problems with anything newer than W2K ?

codec issue cause I have Vista 64 bit and have no issues running the intro movie.
