Question about history/title modding.

I literally just started looking into modding today, and I have a question: How do you define which characters/titles are the vassals of a given character/title at any given date?
I am not even sure if it is per title or character.
I did find how to set the de jure vassals of a title, but not the de facto vassals. Any help would be appreciated.

It's per title, and you do it in the title history file for the vassal title:

1066.12.25 = {
liege = k_england
}

Note that this defines the immediate liege, not necessarily the top liege.
