Random Colony changes

Anyone experience random changes in the ownership of colonies. I saw colonies change nationality in my game last night with no war between the two countries. And had a colony pop up for me in a spot where I never placed a colonist (though, interestingly it is a spot where historically there was a colony for this country.)

Remember that under Treaty of Tordessilas Spain and Portugal can take over colonies owned by other catholic countries without declaring war (in certain areas of the globe).

Ah, the Treay of Tordesillas, yes, that could be it. Except that it was Spain taking over Swedish colonies in Africa that I first noticed and that should be a violation of the Treaty because Portugal got Africa. But at least that might offer an explaination for the otherwise, just plain weird. Oddly enought when a CoT developed it has a Swedish shield on it even thought the colony has a Spanish flag. Still can't figure out how I got a colony in Martinique though - but I am not complaining.

Did you somehow inherit the colony?

I'd love to randomly get a freebee like that. I could imagine a Gilligan's Island type mishap where my colonists headed for Havana ended up in the Virgin Islands. That would cool IMO.
