Stability hits rock bottom if you change anyway, so it doesn't matter much.
 
If so, this may not be historically accurate. As I recall, the only significant Protestant movement in France was Reformed (Huguenots). There was at least the possibility of France going going officially Protestant (wasn't one King of Huguenot background but converted to Catholic when taking the throne?), and if it had done so it would have probably gone directly to Reformed from Catholic.
 
Pressing the pause key and doing the double change has the intended effect even if it is a little clumsy.
