I hope someone can mod this, Make industries, offices and commercial zones abandoned if workers or shoppers cannot get to them in time.

I would also add education requires the cim to actual go to the education building. This would slow down the "everyone's got a PHD" issue.

Traffic is bad as is, the entire game would need to be re-designed if everyone had to reach their destination.

It can be a pretty lenient requirement, but it should not be possible to make an industrial area and a residential area and then never connect them at all.

Honestly, I have yet to have any serious traffic issues. Its all in how you lay out your roads.

This. Yes, I have some busy roads here and there, but its not THAT bad, I dont have huge traffic jams everywhere.
