I recently installed DD and the 1.3a patch. I then installed the Graphics Improvement Mod. Finally I ran Pegasus Hexa Wizard to patch the game to run in 1280x1024 mode. Everything works fine until I select a country and click accept to start a single player game. Then my computer crashes to desktop. I do not get a loading screen, though I can usually see a brown X in the top left hand corner of the screen for a second or two before the game crashes. I also tried using the Resolution Changer Utility instead of Hexa wizard with the same result.

I know that it is somehow the resolution that is causing the crash but I don't know how. The game runs fine if I do not patch it for the higher resolution. After reading this forum and many other places on the web and trying many different solutions I am out of ideas. I tried installing DD to the main c: instead of program files, rename the AVI folder to avi.old, nothing has had an effect.

I am running Vista Ultimate. My graphics card has current drivers (Ati X700), my sound card has current drivers. I have had trouble installing GART drivers for my Nforce 3 motherboard, but I don't know if that would effect anything here. Any help anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated, as I love this game and would love to get back to playing it asap. Thank you in advance.

No ideas? Anything would help. Is it possible there is a problem with the loading screen that comes up after you press the accept button to start a new game? Is that why there is a brown X in the top left corner?

That did the trick!! At some point I had them in there but I must have deleted it on one of the several reinstalls I did. I have been having driver difficulties, but I solved them last night I think. Now everything is working perfectly! Thank you for the suggestion, simple is always better!!

Is there any other path to choose instead of the Pegasus Hexa Wizard?

My Arma game crashes either in the main screen or, in case I enter the game, in exiting and going back to desktop.

I have also used unknown's reschanger but it seems not to work properly.

AFAIK the choices are:

Screen Resolution

According to developer Johan, the screen resolution for the game is locked at 1024x768. There is an unofficial patch that can alter the value, though. You can also take a look at Screen Related Utilities. If you have difficulty playing HoI2 with the "offical" resolution, it might help you solve the problem.
Taken from HOI2 Wiki. The patch and utilities noted above are hyperlinks on this HOI2 Wiki link. Might also want to post the question in the Modding subforums - perhaps someone has additional advice.

Yes, I have already seen a post regarding a screen resolution and the author said to use a load_high.bmp instead of load_user.bmp as it is stated in the Hexa Wizard readme file. Now the game seems to be stable with win98 compatibility under Vista32.
