I noticed in my last game -- I was given the mission of establishing a RM with the Papal States. Usually RM's are pretty easy to get. I had +130 rel with the Pope, but for over 70 years they consistently refused to walk to the altar. We were both Catholic, I lavished smallish gifts (personal letters to keep relation above +100), but to no avail. I've established relations with countries at -120 before ...

Anyone else notice obstinate countries refusing marriage? Anyone know why?

Impossible? How cruel!

I guess that makes sense, the clergy and a monastic order wouldn't be up for marrying.

Not that the Curia in Rome didn't father a veritable army of kids ... but I guess they weren't into respectable marriages.

;)

I had relations of +180 with Sweden and they constantly refused my offer of a RM. Even when I gave another 250 and relations were at +200.

I found out why quite soon after, they declared war on me. Quite cunning on the AI's part I thought, they had a CB on me and refusing the RM allowed them to DOW without loss of stability.

Does Bboy effect RM's? I've got a Portugal game in which almost no one is willing to Rm with me after 1500 ... its odd, Austria, Venice, Hungary, Poland, Russian, Denmark, Russia, France and the list goes on.

The only reason I can figure is that my rapidly expanding colonization efforts boosted by bboy.

The Borgias ran a veritable array of marriages from the Papal See and popes were all from some kind of noble family that would have nieces and nephews to marry off.

It prolly has to do with ur relations. Portugal tends to have a lot around 0 and that's a rating at which the AI doesn't accept RMs.

When it is a bit above 0 they accept cuz they like u and want to improve relations. When it's like in ur case at -100 they accept one to protect their backs. Now if u attack them u will lose 1 stability extra cuz of the breaking of the RM. A strategic military way of using RMs. While when ur at 0 they generally don't care about u.

FYI the "blocked" area for a RM seems to be -5 to +20.
Remember though that values are rounded, thus with a -5 or a +20 rel at times it is still possible to create a RM.
Lower then -150 also seems to be a blocker.

I would say that there is no chance of accepting between -4 and +20. If I was not able to make RM at -5 I was not able to make it at lower relations as well. But at -5 they accepted quite often.

Depends on your monarch's diplomatic abilities also.
And naturally the beauty of the prince/princess you are about to marry is also a factor. Who wants to marry your 250kg niece who looks like she could get a part in horror-movie without make-up?

Yes, this is my point. Sometimes -5 and +20 gets accepted and sometimes not. The reason is that relations are almost NEVER -5 but instead e.g. -5,345721 (ie a 6 decimal number).
