My colonies currently run inevitably into a metal crisis. My map apparently has the max metal. However after my first few domes I cannot expand fast enough to new metal deposits as my first deposits run out.
Deep metal mining is still some time away, and I already can't afford building any dome near such a site
Do I miss any crucial technolgy, or how do I save up more metal?

Deep metal mining is what you need to access the really juicy deposits. You'll want to horde metal for a while leading up to getting that tech. Eventually you'll need the Wonders to provide most of your materials. Running out of water remains a problem on some maps ... which doubly hurts if the randomization sorts moisture vaporizers next-to-last on their tech branch (20k research base cost - ouch!).

(The Core Metal/Rare Metal/Water techs are breakthroughs, so you can't count on those.)

Use your transport rover to create transport route between surface metal and one of your stockpiles. I've managed to support my 5 dome setup into Sol 75 without setting up a single metal extractor and I still have over 1000 metal in the stockpile.

You can also use your RC rover to gather the surface metal into a stockpile before you moving them home with the transport if the deposits are many but very spread out.

Deep deposits everyone can get (eventually). Core are breakthrough-exclusive and seem to be fixed yields: 25k for rares, 50k for metals, 100k or 500k for water.

the bad parti s that eventually you will run out of something.

Deep deposits do have values, so its just a matter of time for them to run out.
Concrete is also limited.

You can have 1 wonder that fix Metal + rare metal or Concrete problem. Can´t have both.
Water you can make with moisture

So currently there is no way to survive a infinite amount of time. Eventually you will run out of resources and face a complete breakdown.

Best option is to have the metal + rare metal mine and a ton of rockets to import tons and tons of concrete.

The Mohole gives you infinite metal and rare metal, the rock to concrete gives you near infinite concrete.
Also the meteors produce rocks (for rock to concrete) metals and rarely polymer. So in the long run your limit is the 20 rare metal from the mohole to produce electronics (or metal if you somehow go over the 50 limit from the same building), both per sol.

With breakthroughs you can get more (even an infinite, nano refinement, gives you very small stuff from depleted extractors.)

Extractor AI (if you get it) is your friend.
