OK - so what is a rutter? Some sort of aquatic mammal? A device for helmsmen with a speech impediment? I know that when I defeat an enemy at sea (a rare occurence - if God meant us to sail on the sea he'd have given us waterproofing) I steal one of them and get to see my enemy's world map. Chambers English and the Oxford Concise dictionaries are unencumbered by references to these beasts.

Do tell.

Maps basically. Some sort of seabooks.

They were more than maps, but included as stated, "seabooks", which included detailed descriptions of how to sail in tricky areas, e.g. where dangerous rocks & shoals might be, prevailing currents and winds, etc.

They were probably the closest thing to "super-top-secret" information that existed in the EU era.
