Rats.
I've now spent about 3 hours with that save game file and can't find
anything wrong with it but it's doing exactly the same thing with my system.
Somewhere in that file (the Granda.eug one) there has to be an error but I simply can't find it and it would take almost forever to carefully read through every single line of code to find it. I
did check all of the provinces and global data carefully, as well as all of the Granada text, but to do the other 100+ countries is simply beyond the scope of what I can do (without quiting my RL job

)
I did notice that you have the following line...
optionfile = "d:\Europa Universalis II\Mod\scenarios\save games\Granada.eug.cfg"
...near the header. Is this a valid folder in your computer? Is it possible that you don't "think* you're running a mod scenario but for some reason it's picking one up? I tried renaming the option file to one of the ones on my system (from a Netherlands save game) but I still had the some problem. On the other hand, maybe there's a line that was added by a scenario mod that is faulty and is burried in the files somewhere that I didn't notice. I also read through all of the events files included (at the end of the file) and didn't notice any "special" paths there.
Normally I would then proceed to read through the last couple years of the history log but, sadly, I don't speak German so I'm at a bit of a loss on most of what I'm reading.
I'm thinking, however, that there
might be a problem with the Ubi German translation of the 1.06 patch since you've had the same problem with two different games. Unfortunately I don't have a copy of the Ubi German patch either (and the language barrier could be a problem

) but I'm pretty much convinced that it's a bug, not a system/hardware problem so what I'm going to do for now is to move this thread over to the German forum for a while.
* * * * * IMPORTANT * * * * *
If anyone else is reading this thread and has the Ubi German release, could you please post here (in English if possible - if not, post in "simple" German and I'll try a Babelfish translation

or maybe some kind person will supply a translation for me?) to let me know whether you are experiencing the same problem with any of your 1.06 games. If so, can you find any common cause (an event triggers just before the CTD?)
Also...
It will be a nuisance, but could you please try playing one more game and doing the following:
- Change your message settings (in Options-->Message Settings) to record everything in your history log - have it put in a line entry for all events and actions, etc., for every country in the game - not just yours.
- Set your autosave to yearly.
- Also manually save every five years or so to a new save game file.
If you experience a crash at roughly the same point, please go back to your most recent autosave game and see if it will load. If it does, play again from there and see if you get the same crash. If it doesn't, go back to the oldautosave and try that one. If it loads, play forward and see if it crashes. If it doesn't load, keep going back through your manual saves until you find out
which save game will load. This will help to pinpoint the time period where the problem is created.
Once you've figured out the rough time period, play
through it and then look very carefully at the history log to see what is "happening in the world" between the period where your save game loads and the next point where you had a save game that wouldn't load. Unfortunately this might take some time and effort - and it may be hard to pin down exactly because if it's a multiple choice event that's causing the crash then the AI might not always pick the option that causes the crash.
The main idea here is to try to identify
when the problem is first created and then to look at what's happening that is causing it. I would be happy to help with this process but, again, the language problem would make it impossible for me to read through the history log to figure it out. Fortunately I happen to know that there are a number of experienced EU2 players, betatesters and file-modders who do speak German and regularly read the German forum so perhaps collectively you can figure out what the issue is.
If you can pin it down to a specific event then you can have a look at the event script and figure out what needs to be fixed/changed. Needless to say this process will require a lot of work (welcome to beta-testing

) but if you can figure out what the problem is and also how to fix it,
please let me know back in the support forum so I can help anyone who has the problem in the future. You should also let Ubi know so they can fix the error - possibly via a revised 1.06 patch or at very least they can make sure it's corrected for their 1.07 patch when it comes out (no...I don't know when that will be).
Sorry for the very long reply...and also that I can't help you with this problem. I will continue to monitor this thread to see how it's going, and if people don't mind posting mostly in English, I can contribute my thoughts if there are any questions. Of course, as I said above, there are many excellent German-speaking players so it might be just as easy if you discuss it all in German and then tell me what the fix is...
Good luck.
EDIT: Note: this thread moved from EU2 Support Forum (English)...
