Screen flickers

I have just installed my brand new (well, new to me) EU II, eager to start conquering and building. Problem: the screen flickers. Every fifteen seconds, the screen gets black for about half a second. It's terribly disturbing. I have all system requirements and really don't understand what is wrong.

Rename the AVI directory (under your main EU2 directory) to prevent the startup movies playing.

If that doesn't help, you have some application running taking focus away from the game briefly. Before you start up EU2 do ctl-alt-del and look at Task List | Applications; there must be NOTHING listed there. Then go to the Process list, look for any AntiVirus app, BitTorrent, MusicMatch ... essentially anything at all that is not a core Windows process and kill it then try the game again.

O thank you! I renamed that file and Shazam! the flickering stopped. Wonderful, I've been waiting for this game for two weeks and I was so afraid I wouldn't be able to play. Thank you AndrewT!
