well, for those of you that read the developer's diary section, im sure you know that 800x600 resolution was proving difficult to manage for Snowball.

but does anyone know whether (due to lack of popular support) was the resolution scrapped altogether? for my crummy old laptop, 800x600 is the lifeline to all Paradox games. will this end with CK?

are you absolutely, positively sure that you can't increase your resolution?
did you try searching for your Laptop manufacturer's web site for updated drivers/bios?

Ladislav, why do you have to play games in the first case -- i hear the weather is going to be fine over your place, so grab your 'blades and head down to the park with a book and a bottle of red waiting at home! :D

PS re: scrapped -- yes, at the moment it is so and i see no reason to change it. for one, we managed to eliminate most of the sidebar scrollers in 1024, so that you grasp the whole info picture with a single look. this won't be possible in 800, and this means you will have to clik-scroll-click each time you play and need to make a decision, and in my book this is very, very, very bad experience, so we'd rather motivate ppl to switch to 1024 then have them suffer and moan.

There's only a minority that still uses 800x600 (unfortunately), so 1024 should be a good idea...:)

I am pretty PC illiterate, I am an expert at following directions but being creative with the inner workings of my PC isnt under my umbrella of talent.

I have a fairly new PC, its a cheap E machine, but its fast, runs windows XP. I know about the pixels and screen resolutions but my question is is this something that will have to be changed every time I play? or when the CK game loads it will auto adjust the screen?

I have never changed the screen res in any other game so if someone could let me know I would appreciate it.

Some games have a possibility to set the resolution. You only need to set it once and the settings are saved - just like EU2/HoI...

Really? I can say I have never changed the screen res for any game. I have always loaded it and played assuming that screen res was just a personal preference for Icon size not a requirement that differed from game to game.

Well, some games have a default resolution, with the option to use a higher resolution if your hardware can take it. E.g. for EU2 you get 800 *600 when you start up with a clean install, but you can choose 1024x768 and 1280x1024 with the setup utility. In e.g. MOHAA you can choose from at least two different resulutions, IIRC...

thats cool, but what exactly is the advantage if it isnt required? Is it a resolution of the picture enhancement? or do the images just simply appear bigger?

For me all I can tell is that the images are bigger, not more defined.

Usually in 2d games, if you have a greater resolution, all the sprites seem smaller so you can display more of them on the same physical screensize. 3d games is another matter.

How big your physical screensize is should be a big determinant in which resolution you choose.

i know that i can increase it higher. i played civ3, but i had to scroll to the edge of the screen to access some buttons.

like sergei said, in 800x600 it would have to be scroll-click-scroll, but when i run higher resolutions it is the same for me, so in the end i get the short end of the stick anyway.

now if it is too difficult, i will stop complaining, but you said you had a quasi-workable 800x600 resolution, could you maybe just throw it in as an option - and let the player decide which tedious process is more preferable for him? and make 1024 the default resolution?

just a thought, if its too much work :( btw, its gonna rain tommorow, the only beautiful day is today and i still managed to miss a rendez vous i had. its just a bad day overall, not to mention what i think is a budding allergy... oh dear

2D games make the stuff smaller so you can fit more, and in 3D games it makes it look clearer and better image but you need a good video card.

I just hope they make some stuff in CK that would look good really good with my geforce fx 5600 :)
