Okay, I'm very new at this but I saw it and I was curious. I was playing as Venice and had fought a rather large war against Turkey with my alliance. I got Bosnia and Austria got Serbia I think. But my army managed to lay seige to a large portion of Turkish Europe thanks to the fact that the Turkish army had been massacered fighting the Mameluks. Now that the war is over (and has been for a while) I look at the Political map and see my shield in Greece, which is still in Turkish control. Any idea what that means?

yup, it's a CB (Casus Belli -> reason for war) shield. Basically it means that whomever controls the province that has your shield on it, you have a CB against them. However, as soon as you conquer those provinces the CB is no more.

For example, France has a CB shield against England becasue England owns Calais. Well if France DOW England and takes Calais, then France has no more CB against England.

If ur looking on the political map, that indicates a core province of urs. If another country occupies such a province, u have a permanent CB against it untill u get it under control. They also won't have nationalist revolts when it comes under ur control as they're a home provicne of u.

Thanks very much. I've still been experimenting around (read: got my butt kicked in Venice) and played another game as Austria. When I saw that Bohemia had all those shields, I put two and two together. Especially when my Alliance carved up Bohemia and I suddenly had a CB against my two allies :)
