Does sacking a capital automaticaly get you the world maps of the country? (As England I might consider attacking Portugal's capital just for the maps). I know that fighting and winning naval battles COULD get you the maps of the opponent.

Just to clarify ... I'm talking about winning a siege. Not annexing. Do I still get the maps?
Yes, whenever you occupy the capital province, you get the maps of that country. Hence, a popular tactic for England is to occupy Lisbon fairly early in the game to get a headstart on Asia. Since I think this is rather ridiculous, I''m in favor of eliminating the automatic gain of maps in this fashion.

dito.
or have a random chance of getting SOME maps (divide the world in area (N. America, Central America, S. America, SE Asia, Indies, Africa, Atlantic, Pacific, Indian)

Dunno, looks quite realistic to me... You take the capital, put a gun on forehead of nations equivalent of you and demand yourself some nice maps. And it's Portugese fault anyway... who asked such a weak nation to colonize so much :)

Quite so. It's one of those feature in the game that is realistic, but once learned can be used for significant advantage to the human player. It's a bit like us having an existing knowledge of the world so we know where to send explorers.

Can't really see why it should change much but some feature that gives the defending nation the chance to remove or destroy valuable property like maps or to keep them more secure might be a useful amendment. But this also needs to be thought out since the country concerned would not want to lose their maps so would have copies here and there and this would mean that there would have to be an increased chance of picking up the maps in another of their provinces and not just the capital.

But certainly hiding the maps and splitting them would be an interesting new feature and would reduce the benefit of the rather simple "Sack Lisbon" strategy.

What we really need is to teach the AI to defend its capital. FREX put a line

IF(enemy.occupy.captial.or.enemy.siege.capital)
THEN Send entire horde to retake capital

add a few lines like if the enemy controlls provinces within your country then you dont go on the offensive untill the enemy is kicked out. This would save scotland which insists on sieging newcastle while norfolk takes over all of scotland.
