I've tried:

Replacing C++ Redistribute
Re-installing Game
Checking Cashe Files
Running eastindia.exe (this gives me a side-by-side config error)
Changing the Data Protection variables
Re-installing Steam
... Probably quite a bit more...

And I cannot get the game to even think about starting. All other steam games are fine.

My system is a Vista 64 Quad 8Gb with a 9800GT Graphics card and I can't find a log file

Any ideas??

Thanks.

Hi

Hmmmmmm.... try repairing steam from Control panel> programs & features option in windows, that has worked for me when I had a similar problem with another game & Steam had messed up after a recent update ;)

Regards

I am working with Steam to try to resolve this problem. They do recommend updating your visual C++ drivers to the latest ones. But that has not helped me on my 64 bit version. I have asked steam to put up EIC version 1.06 back up so that people who have EIC acan play it while Steam or Paradox/Nitro figure out what is causing the problems with 64 bit operating systems / steam and director's cut. I can get Pirates Bay and Privateer to work on 64 bit Windows 7 retail. I have tried to repair steam, reinstall steam and such with no avail to the problem either. I have tried all their trouble shooting recommendations on their troubleshoot guide for "program is Unavailible" , "Problems using Windows 7" and "64-bit operating systems". I have tried all trouble shooting recomendations on this website as well, but since the program is controlled by Steam I am unsure how much of the program uses the original files or the ones steam uses and the files are burried in the steam directories.

Hey everybody.
I had the exact same issue as Oldjim on my win7 x64... BUT, I think i found a way to make it work.

I have read through much of steams forum, and no one had an answer if updating C++ didnt work
I tried everything, re downloading the game, clearing the blob, verifying cache etc
installing and reinstalling C++ did nothing..
Even the answer from steam support was "have you tried installing c++?"
Also, it seems the issue only appears on X64 versions of windows. very fun since i just bought win7 x64 a couple of days ago.
loosing hope, i thought i would try to start the exe directly from the game folder (works some times)
Then, i had a thought: "hey, the steam folder (and therefore all steam games) is located in the X86 prog.files folder.. could it be that easy??" i then with renewed hope downloaded the X86 version of C++, installed it and HEY PRESTO!, it worked.

So my tip is install Both x64 and x86 versions of C++ ;)

please reply if this helps

Solution

Good thinking Changis... Very good thinking!

That worked for me too, the version of the x86 C++ I got from the EiC folder. That's C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\common\east india company\CRT\vcredist_x86.exe.

It then works directly from steam.

Makes you wonder if steam ever bother testing their system of different platforms.

I hope it works for others too.

Cheers.

Yeah, got the steam version working, but this is the first and last time I buy a game off of steam. I find the following reasons why.

1. If you buy multiple games, you cant plat the multiple games at the same time, so you cant buy your family a game unless you make a different account for each game, because you can only be logged onto the account with one computer at one time.

2. You have to be online when you play the game, so I cant transfer the game to my laptop and play anywhere I want to play the game. Or if you lose your internet connection you lose your game.

3. They gave me the Pirates Bay add-on when I purchased the Privateer Pack. Then they removed it without saying a word. Got it loaded but it will not play unless I pay for it. Its not my mistake they gave it to me, but once they did, they shouldn't take it back.

In Steam there is also the Offline mode for what you want. Choose "My Games" tab, then in the menu choose File, and then Go Offline
