I mostly see it applied via event- for example, when children grow up there are plenty of events that can lead to stress, or courtier events ("I Want to be Steward even Though I'm 50% worse than your incumbent Steward!").
If you have two conflicting traits, you are more likely to get an event that will give you stress. As for any single trait leading to a Stress event firing, I'll wait for the experts to chime in. Big traits, like Excommunicated or Realm Duress, might fit the bill here.
