No sound at all

Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
absolutely no sound in game at all. brand new install, no mods added. initially the game would not launch from steam. i verified integrity of local files,a nd browsed to local files and launched the game from there. i got an error saying x3daudio1_7.dll was not found, so i downloaded it and placed it in the directory where the surviving mars exe was. the game then launched, but no sound at all from UI, menu, game, etc. nothing. computer has sound outside the game.
Windows 10, direct x 12 installed, GTX680 video card.
Can you replicate the issue?
yes, uninstalled steam and surviving mars, rebooted computer, updated GPU drivers, still no change.
