RED EAGLE : the 1.05c Solution to my original AAR...

Unaware of the December 13,1941 bug (freeze) my original Communist America AAR is over. It was intersting to play tho, and I decided to give another go at it. If the patching I did does not work, and this hangs again after playing 5 years, needless to say - I'll be a bit annoyed ...

************************************************

It was a rainy night in Washington DC.

Earl Browder awoke with a start. The leader of the fledgling “Red Eagle” political party thought through the dream he just had.
((Browder's Dream, a prior AAR ))
Was what he saw a portent of what he should do ? Or a warning of what he should not ? One thing was clear – the time for the move was approaching. The depression seemed to drag on forever. As people began to express more discontent and more unrest, the “Red Eagles” spoke of ‘destiny’, ‘leadership’, and ‘better times.’ If what he saw was a portent, then he had barely a year to get his people into the key positions. He began to make the list – those who could be muscled out of the way, and those who would have to be dealt with in a more permanent means. Earl Browder was a man with certain “moral flexibilities.” And he was not afraid to use them.

Browder quickly began to write down the details of his dream, while they were still fresh in his mind. If it was a portent, he did not want to lose it.

Good, restarting this AAR. I like it already :p

Question ...

I downloaded the 1.05c patch,
and simply copied the new files into my HIO folder - replacing the old ones.

Do I have to do anything else?

Is that correct ?

I dread the thought of going thru all this agian and having it lock up on me ...

Spring, 1936

After months of the worst economic downturn the USA had ever seen, tempers boiled over. The Army was ordered out to quell uprisings across the country. However, in many cases, the soldiers either stepped aside or joined in the massive anti-government show of force.

July 4, 1936

In a dramatic move, elements of the newly emerged “Red Eagle” party made a move for power. A series of “accidents”, and a convenient “cold” by the President later – the United States of America was under new leadership.

The head of the new government was Earl Browder.

A man of modest stature, President Browder gave a speech to a standing room only crowd in New York’s Yankee Stadium.

In his speech he told the people there that it was time for a new America.
Time for America to assume its true “Manifest Destiny.”
He proclaimed that the “Monroe Doctrine” was not only a “keep your hands off”
notice to those outside of the Western Hemisphere, but it was also notice to all those within the Western Hemisphere that we are the rulers of this portion of the globe.

He had harsh words for the rising governments in Germany and in Italy.
He called them nothing more than “thinly disguised dictatorships.”
He also spoke poorly of Great Britain, calling England a country which had
“misused the crown of World Leader” when it subjected Germany to the post-WWI economic pressures which lead to the dictatorial governments now in charge.

He told those gathered and those listening by radio that the fruits of their hard labors had been squandered by the government elect. He and his people had taken a page from the writings of Thomas Jefferson when he capped his speech with the words :
"Prudence will dictate that governments long established, should not be changed for light and transient causes. But, when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce the people under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security."

He then concluded his speech with the words, "Today, my friends, is your Independence Day."

The newspapers on July 5th wrote with cautious words.

No one knew what to expect from these “Red Eagles.” They said all the right words, but something still did not seem right. The United States was founded upon a revolution, but that seemed like so long ago. It was a different time, wasn’t it ?

They listened as they were told that the smaller countries of the Western Hemisphere were simply too small and too backward to be allowed to continue on their current paths. The countries of Central and Southern America would be better off if they were brought into the fold of the United States. And some people began to believe…

The newspapers listed those whom President Browder named to his cabinet.

Sam Darcy, foreign minister. Known as an Ideological Crusader.
Wyndham Mortimer, armaments minister. A Resource Industrialist.
Alexander Bittelman, minister of security. Quietly referred to as The Prince of Terror.
William Donovan, minister of intelligence. A Dismal Enigma.
Malin Craig, Chief of Staff & the Army. An advocate of Defense, and “Guns & Butter”
Willian Standley, Chief of the Navy. Advocate of the Base Control Doctrine
Oscar Westover, Chief of the Air Force. Advocate of Army Airpower Doctrine.

The first order of business in the new administration was to find out who was responsible for the terrible waste of the American tax dollars. That was an easy task. A doctored set of records, and a few names (some real, some fictional) and behold ! A covert displacement of money to a bank in the Dominican Republic. President Browder declared the people who perpetrated this scam to be criminals, and declared that due to the Dominican Republics part in the entire scam, that a state of war now exists between the United States and the Dominican Republic.
The people, most of them desperate for some answers, seemed to accept this. They were put to work on several government sponsored projects. Idle factories were reopened to provide new arms and equipment for the military. President Browder started a new project, called the Wall of Freedom. The Wall of Freedom was a line of fortifications along the entire border between the US and Canada, and the US and Mexico. People worked hard, and slowly began to forget about the hard times of the early 1930’s …

For the first weeks, the people of the United States watched, and listened.
They saw order restored and the level of civil dissent began to reduce.

On January 8th, Security Minister Bittelman presented President Browder with evidence that Mexico was applying influence to American politicians.

*********************************************

Thru the early Spring of 1937, a massive reorganization of the American Armed Forces took place. The Navy was reorganized into task forces build around aircraft carriers or troop transports. The Army reorganized and reformed into Corps based on a 5 division structure. New divisions were ordered up as fast as possible. New infantry and mountain troops were armed with the best in artillery, anti-tank or anti-aircraft, as well as engineer brigades. America was getting ready to flex its military muscles.

President Browder consulted his notes from that fateful dream he had often.

It seemed that most of the actions took place only after England and France went to war with Germany. There was a certain logic to it. No same country would ever engage in a 2 front war if they could avoid it …

Research went along at full speed, and along with it recruiting.
The call went out –
if you wanted a job with good pay, the Army was a place for you.
And men answered the call in droves.

The dissenters in the populous slowly fell silent …

“… and I am happy to be able to stand here today and tell you that American is again a great power. Her people are happy to be back to work. Her economy is strengthening. And her destiny lies before her.

I have to share disturbing news with you all tho. I have been presented with evidence of repeated political intrusion into the Western Hemisphere by European powers. And their influence grows even within our own backyard. Mexico, our peace loving neighbor to the south. I have definitive proof of Mexican tampering in the government of Cuba. And worse, evidence of influence being applied to leaders even here within our own government. I hereby place all the nations of the world on notice … “

Minister Mortimer reports that his stockpiles of rubber have run out. In spite of his efforts to secure supplies from out of country, the factories are making due with converting oil into rubber. This is inefficient, but for now is not presenting a problem.

President Browder indicates this is only a temporary problem. Soon enough, the United States will have all the resources it needs …

At the end of the meeting, President Browder speaks quietly with Chief of the Army Craig. He gives orders for plans to be drawn up for an invasion of Venezuela. The timetable is not set, but plans are being laid down. In short order, American Army Corps begin arriving in the Canal Zone.

President Browder called a meeting of the upper level staff …

He outlined a plan, conceived by hum, and drawn up by Chief of Staff Craig.

It was only a matter of time before Europe boiled over.
As soon as it did, President Browder intended to move southward from the Panama Canal Zone. First would be Columbia. Once it was secured, Venezuela was next. Then, the big plum, Brazil. After that, the only real opposition left would be the Argentina.

Beyond that, well that depended upon Europe.
If England became a nuisance – then Canada would be dealt with.
If the Axis powers, then Africa was in easy reach from Brazil …

Popular opinion seemed to support the President’s speeches of ‘manifest-destiny’. Even since the unemployment rate went below 2%, the people had come to wholly embrace President Browder and his cabinet as the only ones competent to lead the Americas. Very soon, that faith would be put to the test. Would they continue to rally behind him, or once America became a conqueror would they paint them as monsters ?

“… and so, it is with a heavy heart I reveal to you the level of intrusion that has occurred within the nations of South America. Argentina is all but a puppet of the Germans. Columbia has troops massed at our border in Panama. In the face of this evidence, and given the very unstable nature of Europe at this time, I am ordering our Armed Forces to begin operations in South America. Their mission will not be one of oppression, rather one of liberty. The people of South America have been lead astray by their governments. The people cry for help to throw off the yoke of oppression and economic depression. I intend to see that they too can realize the dream that American have; a dream of prosperity, a dream of peace, a dream of security, and a dream of being a part of something so much better than they have now. …”

The orders went out the same night, and plans were put into action …

September 6, 1940, off the coast of Cartagena, Columbia.

3 Corps under overall command of General MacArthur rolled ashore and quickly routed the lone Columbian division there. General MacArthur immediately ordered an advance towards Bogota. He sent Griswold’s 2nd Mountain towards the province of Medellin, to cut of the Columbian troops that Stillwell was advancing on in Cali. The transports offshore began to steam back to the Panama Canal Zone to ferry reinforcements up to the new front …

Genral Stillwell’s Mountain Corps began the long trudge across the mountainous province of Cali. They were escorted all the way by 3 Air Corps of tactical bombers with close air support escorting them. Even days before Stillwell’s men would make contact, the Columbian defenders were being pummeled.

***********************

Mid-September, General MacArthur’s Corps, supported by an armored Corps led by General Patton, and a mechanized infantry Corps led by General Hodges, captured the Columbian capitol of Bogota after a brief skirmish. The defenders had been completely disorganized by the heavy airstrikes from the prior days.

***********************

On September 28th, Griswold’s 2nd Mountain Corps defeated light resistance in the region of Medellin. This move completely cut off the 3 divisions facing Stillwell’s 1st Mountain Corps, assuring their complete destruction …

On October 7th, General Stillwell smashed the remnants of 3 Columbian divisions in Cali province. With the last organized remains of their army gone, the Columbian government was annexed into the greater umbrella of the United States of America.

The Columbian campaign lasted just over 1 month, and cost 9 points of infantry, 21 points of mechanized inf / armor, and 30 points of aircraft losses.

October 26th, A combined force on Patton’s Armored Corps, and Mechanized Infantry Corps under Griswold, and Hodges, rolled thru the Venezuelan province of Maracibo. The 2 defending divisions had no chance against 15 modern divisions. The 3 army air corps immediately rebased forward to support the naval landing that were due within a day.

October 27th, 11:00 am

The naval landing force, lead by Stillwell’s Mountain Corps came ashore at Caracas.
3 Army Air Corps began bombing at 12:00 the same day. Venezuelan General Angarita had 4 divisions, and 3 out-dated air squadrons to combat 15 divisions supported by 15 Air squadrons. The issue was never in doubt. Within 6 hours, General Angarita withdrew his forces in modest order. He was buying time, but it was a useless jesture. On November 7th, General Stillwell’s force caught General Angarita’s troops in Cumana province. While he had managed to pull together 2 more divisions, his men were nearly spent from the fight in Caracas and the ensuing retreat. After a few hours of fighting, General Angarita sent a flag of truce across the lines. He signed papers accepting the annexation of Venezuela on the evening of November 7th.

***************************************************

November 9th, The Second Mountain Corps, under General Collins, along with MacArthur’s Infantry Corps, and Patton’s Armored Corps boarded ships outside of Caracas.

The next phase of the American plan in South America consisted of taking down Brazil. While very large in land, and having a large army, the Americans thought they had a good plan laid out. They expected that the Brazilian government would fold if they lost the half of their country with outside contacts.

The first part of the assault on Brazil was a strike at the province Recife. This corner province was expected to play a key role in the conquest.

The second part is to land more troops in Belem, up the coast from Recife. This would give the Brazilian Army 2 fronts to face. While the Brazilians move, the idea is to run the length of the coast, thru the best developed roads in Brazil.

A newly recruited Marine Corp was due for deployment on December 3rd. Allowing a week or two for combat organization, lead to a launch date of December 17th. That also would allow time for another full tactical bomber air corps to be in the field as well …

************************************

All went as planned … the Marine Corps was not completely ready for deployment, but all other factors were in place. At midnight, December 13, 1939, the United States made the following announcement ….

President Browder addresses the nation by radio …

“… and so it is after much consideration that I have decided that we simply cannot afford to look the other way in South America any longer. The Brazilian government has been applying undue pressure upon Bolivia and Argentina. As I said when I took office – The Monroe Doctrine was a warning to those outside the Western Hemisphere, as well to those with it. As of midnight tonight, due to a complete breakdown in communications, I hereby declare that America is standing with Argentina against the aggression of Brazil…”

meanwhile, off the coast of Recife province, Brazil,

Patton’s Armored, Collins Mountaineers, and MacArthur’s Infantry Corps began landing operation at 12:01 am, December 14th. The only defenders were a single division and 3 air squadrons …

*************************************
The Campaign in Brazil

Within 3 hours, General MacArthur secured the port area in Recife. Hasty arrangements were made to begin to convoy in fuel for Patton’s tanks. MacArthur struck out immediately for Foraleza province to the West, while ordering Collins Maoutaineers to move South and secure Salvadore. Early reports from Slavadore idndicated a possible armored presence there …

Patton’s Armor had fuel within a day or so of landing. Then he headed south.

General Stillwell’s Mountain Corps landed in Belem and found almost no resistance. He called for reinforcement, and headed south into the heart of Brazilian territory.

Red%20Eagle%20Scrnshot1.bmp

January 10th, General Stillwell’s Mountaineers secured Belo Horizante.

January 13th, General Patton secures Vitorio. He stops just long enough to call for Hodges Mechanized Infantry to move up and secure the area, and pushes onwards.

Also, January 13th, apparently General Clark’s Corps has dissolved in the jungles around Macapa. He had gone it to secure a transition landing field to allow the A-20 squadrons to shuttle into the landing zones. After approx. 2 weeks here, it seems his command dissolved. Security Minister Bittelman is investigating the matter …

January 15th, Patton’s Armor reaches the Brazilian Capitol. It takes only 1 hour to overrun the 3 defending divisions. Overwhelming air superiority had been hitting the defenders around the clock …

January 18th, Patton’s Armor reaches Santos Province. Again, after barely an hour of fighting, he controls the area. Undaunted yet, Patton presses onwards. He has heard from locals that the remnants of the Brazilian government has fled to Sao Palo.

January 25th, Armored Forces under George Patton capture the remaining Brazilian government officials in Sao Palo. Using the front of one of the 2nd Armored “Hell on Wheels” divisions Christie tanks as a bench, he accepts the surrender of Brazil. The Brazilian government accepts annexation into the expanding United States of America.

********************************************

Malin Craig’s plan worked to perfection.

In 43 days, armed forces of the United States forced the government of Brazil to surrender. At the time of the surrender there were at least 20 divisions trying to countermarch Southward in response to the naval landings. The fast deployment by sea allowed the American forces to land with an average of 5 to 1 superiority. Patton’s armor lead the way in brushing aside the coastal defenses. The Americans never fought the majority of the Brazilian Army – they simply out maneuvered it.

Red%20Eagle%20Scrnshot2.bmp

With the exception of the debacle of losing Clark’s corps to supply failure,

Losses in the Brazilian Campaign were :
3 pts of Infantry, 5 point of Armor, no Mechanized Infantry loss, and 157 points of Aircraft. The round the clock bombing campaign allowed the ground troops to move forward almost non-stop, albeit at a heavy cost to the air crews.

The political spin-doctors went to work on the American people. The quick succession of attacks in South America has some people worried. Dissent began to cut into production, so President Browder ordered an information campaign to show just how much better off the South American countries were after we had freed them. At the same time, he ordered military research and armaments production slashed for a few months. The resultant spike in consumer goods began to produce the desired effects. Between the movie reels with pictures of happy Brazilian children giving American GI’s flowers, and the fact that almost everyone could afford some small form of luxury, the American confidence in the cause began to return. By the beginning of June, the dissent level was under 16%, and falling off rapidly.

On June 23, 1940, Security Minister Bittelman presents evience to the President that Mexico is attempting to unite the Central American countries. Repeated attempts to pressure Guatemala are sited. President Browder gives the go-ahead for operations in Argentina, and orders plans for an immediate redeployment following that to deal with Mexico …

*****************************************
The Argentina Campaign

On June 23, The United States declares war on Argentina. The reasons sited are it continual communications with the Axis powers.

3 Army Corps under General Patton (1 Arm, 1 Mot Inf) and 3 Air Corps begin the campaign by moving against Argentinean General Justo in Corrientes province. His force consists of 9 infantry divisions.

Meanwhile, 2 infantry corps, under MacArthur and Hodge, board ships in Santos, Brazil. They are a flanking force that will land behind the Argentinean lines in the area of Buenos Aires.

****************************
On June 30th, Patton’s force secured Corrientes. The week of air attacks had reduced the defending 9 divisions to complete ineffectiveness. Patton immediately ordered an advance to Santa Fe province, and ordered MacArthur & Hodge to land in Mar del Plata immediately.

On July 6th, MacArthur’s force came ashore facing very light opposition. Once established, they coordinated with Patton’s Armored columns in an attack on Buenos Aires. The combine force hit the city on the 11th. The defending divisions fought desperately, but were no match for the American juggernaut. On the 12th, the city fell.

Stillwell’s Mountain Corps headed west, down the coast. On the 27th, he found the remnants of the Argentinean Army in the province of General Roca. He sent a flag of truce across the lines, and it was accepted. The last of the Argentinean forces surrendered that night, and the country was annexed.

Total losses for the campaign :

11 pts of Infantry, 22 pts of Armor / Motorized, and 227 pts of airpower

It sure seems that the flyboys take an abnormally high level of casualties. Even when the target is completely out of organization, they keep getting shot to hell.

On the Sept. 19th, Acapulco was secures, followed by Vera Cruz the following day.

On October 3rd, Collin’s Mountain Corps secured Mexico City. That night the repulsed a strong but disorganized counterattack by 10 Mexican divisions. Patton’s mechanized column began to swing north towards Monterrey, while Stillwell’s Mountain Corps swung around thru the south coastal areas. DeWitt’s newly formed Marine Corps was expected to complete the encirclement by landing in Culiacan on the 8th.

October 12th, Stillwell’s Corps seized Guadalajara. He called for air strikes from Mexico City to the province of San Luis Potosi. He ordered his men to advance on the Mexican lines there. Meanwhile, Patton’s column continued to circle the Mexican flanks, moving for Chihuahau.

October 17th, the mechanized column secured Chihuahua, and 2 days later the coastal province of Culiacan was captured. The evening of October 19th, Stillwell’s Corps seized the last Mexican stronghold of San Luis Potosi. General Serrano signed the official papers ceding all of Mexico to the United States.

The Mexican campaign took just over a month,
Losses were :

105 infantry points (of which 88 were from DeWitt’s Marines who made the amphibious assault behind Mexican lines), 32 armored / motorized points, and 151 points of airpower.
