Hello kind gentlesirs and gentlemaidens,

I shall impart to you knowledge of a nifty, free little program that will handily solve a great many networking problems.

It's called Hamachi. And it's cooler than hot apple pie a-la mode. It creates a virtual private network, except it's God-strike-me-dead easier to set up, and impossible to mess up.

For anyone having problems playing, losing sync for reasons that are not bandwidth-related, host not found, etc. etc. etc., this might very well be your solution. It makes things so much easier for DirectPlay (what Paradox use) and other multiplayer protocols because it makes NAT invisible to your game. NAT creates so many complications, unfortunately, which is why earlier today I was researching VPN and then happened upon Hamachi. My counterpart and I were finally able to play a game longer than a minute.

Anyway, best of luck -- I hope this helps someone with an odd problem or two that just seems to otherwise defy solution. Keep in mind that all games played using Hamachi will be "LAN" games, not IP address games, unless you're particularly masochistic.

PS: The efficiency of this approach merits sticky status, IMO.
