I am new to EU and I use EU 1.09 UK edition. I am still struggling with the tutorial where I have seen some odd behaviour in connection with restoring a saved game. I can only play for 10-30 minutes at a time so I need to save quite often.

During the tutorial various tasks are set up for me, such as "Establish contact with Catalunya" or "Enter a military alliance with Catalunya". The troubles come when restoring a game: The game system believes that I have already accomplished the current task and proceeds to the next task. When I still had not established contact with Catalunya I was directed to enter a military alliance with them, and after a couple of more restores of savegames I was supposed to declare war on the Mamelukes even though I was nowhere near them.

Now I seem to be stuck: I have caught up with the tasks, I have a large army ready to attack the Mamelukes but I do not seem able to declare war on them. Having a military alliance and a royal marriage with Catalunya, and Catalunya being at war with the Mamelukes, I expect to have a Casus Belli on the Mamelukes but the "Declare War" command is greyed out. Catalunya never asked me to honour the alliance and declare war on the Mamelukes (I did look for the little flag at the top of the screen).

I have tried to insult the Mamelukes in the hope that they will oblige by declaring war on me, but I have had no luck so far.

Is there a general problem with restoration of saved games? Can I somehow edit the saved game to bring me to a state where Catalunya will ask me to honour the alliance so that I can finish the scenario?

this is probably no direct help to you. But I suggest quitting the Tutorial and starting a Grand Campaign. If you've gotten so far in your tutorial, you know how to move troops around and stuff like that, than you've already learned all the tutorial is going to teach you. Just load a GC and have fun

You are probably right. But I tend to be perfectionist, and I would feel there is an unfinished business here. Besides, I have never fought a real, only fighting against natives. I expect the tutorial system to pop up and tell me about various things I should be aware of when I conclude a peace and so on. I am also apprehensive of other troubles I might get in the future when restoring games.

In the real game you won't get any major problems when you restore a saved game. Other than the fact that historical events aren't saved--which sometimes can be a blessing. The problem you are getting is specific to the Tutorial, which is programmed idfferently than the game itself.

I still think you're better off starting a GC as one of the easier countries to get a feel for it. Try France. Then if you run into problems, and you probably will, just post your question in the General Discussion Forum. There are people there that have the answer to everything.

The original version did not have a save option for the tutorial.
It was added later in a patch. It doesnt always work too well. Also other things in the tutorial dont work the same as in the game.
Once you know your way around the interface then you have learned all that you really can from it. You may be a perfectionist but the tutorial is not perfect!
Josephus I advice is sound. Start on the General Campaign. Russia makes a good starter - armies are cheap and you get a nice quiet start. You will learn more from this than from the tutorial.
In the game itself - there is a wealth of information to help you along just by hovering your cursor over an item or detail. Try it and see.....

p.s. When you start the game go to Menu/Options/Message settings and set how game messages appear. I dont like the symbols that appear in the top right corner and they may be set as a message "popup". They cannot be missed then.

Thanks everybody. I have given up the tutorial. How could anybody without all the time in the world complete the tutorial in the days when there was no save facility? The tutorial would be much smaller if you were not supposed to fight a power at the other end of Europe!

Anyway, I have started playing France in the 30 Years War, but it already seems to complicated so I might follow your advice and play Russia in the GC.

Russia in the GC is a great place to start to learn EU.

The Tutorial, apart from teaching the basic game mechanics, is a total waist of time in my humble view. - bit like the manual (oooh dig there Paradox ...sorry:p )

Cheers, Ice:cool:
