I buy EU and play it for about a week. Then one day it craches. I restart my computer and continue playing. Now it craches after less than an hour. But this time the computer wont start up again. The BIOS works, but as soon the computer is about to read from the HD, it freezes and the HD makes strange sounds. I was not even able to format. I have now sent it in for repair, and that will probably take a few weeks.
But since I like EU, I couldnt wait a few weeks. So I start playing it at my sisters computer. And just as before, I play it for about a week and then my computer stops working, it wont start up.
So why do I think EU is the reason behind this? Well, EU is the only software that has been on both computers. The second computer was just formatted and non of the programs on it was on the first computer. In normal cases, I wouldnt suspect any software to destroy the HD but in this case, everything seems to point to EU...

In my case:

1) Game crashes just as a result of long-hour play. In laptops, games are more prone to crash.

2) Game crashes when it tries to read irrelevant data from the programfile/europa universalis drive. I made modifications to leaders, provinces, and monarchs files, and whenever I made miskates there (e.g. allocating the same ID number to two leaders, putting 10 in the terrain column of provinces, which is not relecant, and so on)

3) My laptop can not read the CD. This often happens, and I have to re-insert the CD to make it work.

Yet, all of my cases are not as serious as yours. Did you download scenarios from somewhere else, which do not work, or you might have changed game files to the degree that can not be corrected?

Q.

I suspect that after each "crash" you turned off the machine whilst it was still accessing the HDD.
EU does not alter any system files.
I am trying to put the following as gently as possible but:-
As well as the EU software being a constant - so were you. :)

But the constant of me has been there for many years with no problems. It is very possible that I am a part of the problem, but I still think EU also plays a part too. And its easier for the EU creators to fix the problems in the games than in the gamers. :)

Thank you for not taking umbrage.

Software destroying a HDD:

I suppose it could be done but the software would have to be written just for that purpose. If that was the case with EU then we would all have destroyed HDDs. I just cannot see that the "EU Creators" have anything to fix. Believe me, if there was any substance in the "EU destroyed my HDD" thought, there would be one mighty outcry on these forums and not the discussions you see now.

It looks like you have just had a bad luck coincidence.

Hang around, I am sure Patric will comment when he sees this.
