1. My vassals' loyalty seems to be very...erratic. Every now and then I'll get the low vassal loyalty indicator, saying Duke Such-and-Such has a loyalty of 47 or something, and it will slowly build back up, and then drop down to 24 or something and slowly build back up. Then, it will either go back up to 100 or drop to 0 and they will declare war on me. Is this normal behaviour and I'm missing something (I've been trying to keep my badboy low and not have rival vassals), or is it something else?

2. Is it normal for everything to go to hell when the king dies? Nearly every single goddamn time I get a new king, about half of my vassals declare independence and declare war. Fortunately, it doesn't happen too much as my dynasty seems to be rather healthy, for my rulers are living well into their 50s and 60s and sometimes 70s. But I've been slowly expanding my realm over the centuries, so each time the king dies, I face more and more vassals breaking away.

Actually, I lied.

3. Where's the screenshot thread? There was one at one point, but it seems to have gone missing.

Thanks in advance.

Can't give you detailed answer on #1 and #2, sorry. Veldmaarschalk can.
Actually, I lied.
The cake is a lie.

There're actually 3 of them.

I believe it's an event that they're experiencing that causes their loyalty to drop so severely and suddenly. Certain conditions (having a different culture than your vassal, or having a different governing law, e.g.) can cause events to fire for your vassals, one of the possible outcomes of which includes a steep loyalty hit.

So there's nothing really that one can do to stop this?

Oy.

I'm guessing two is sort of the same idea; my vassals getting some sort of event, and my vassals being the shifty bastards they are, they go for the option that lowers their loyalty.

Such is life. :p

1. He has the 'Rebellious' trait most likely. They get events that lower their loyalty from time to time, and will give them events to either break free or try to instigate civil war. Rebellious vassals are bad and if there are enough of them, they can give you 'Realm Duress' which will certainly plunge your nation into civil war.

2. I think all direct vassals loose 50% loyalty when the ruler dies. This is most likely to show that there were usually some instability whenever there was a transfer of power. Depending on the heir, the loyalty should rise again fairly quickly. But it is always good to have some cash on hand, to bribe some of the vassals back into line :)

Also all vassals (even you, if you have a liege) get an event asking if they will pledge allegiance to the new ruler. I think the AI usually does, unless they are 'Rebellious' in which case I think they always refuse and then declare Independence.

'Loyalist' vassals GOOD, 'Rebellious' vassals BAAAAD!!

There's obviously a loyalty hit zhen your vassal dies and his heir takes over, even he's his son, or your family.
Same for all your vassals - except family, I think - when your own guy dies.

INdeed, it's funny that you're included - due to the fact you usually have one or more lower title than your King or Duke one - in the "pledge loyalty" pop-up question. Free prestige to begin the reign :D

Ok, and another thing...

My King died, I got the big massive civil war and realm duress and all that, and I put down all those rebellious vassals, and then I started to get bombarded with vassalisation requests, I'd say about 30-50, from random counties all over the map. I kept saying no, but they were very persistent, and I was being bombarded with these text boxes about 30 times a month. Finally, I said yes to all the requests, and about doubled the size of my realm.

Then my king died of the plague, and they all declared independence. Not wanting to deal with it, I used the "byzantine" cheat to recognize their independence.

Now they are asking for vassalisation again.
Is there anyway that I can consolidate my realm by editing the savegame file? I have all these little vassal counts in random places like Egypt, England, and France that I don't really feel like dealing with.

Also, I keep having a few vassals with a supposed loyalty of 100 declaring war on me. They're not rebellious, they're the same culture as the king (Basque), and they're blood relatives. (though that might make things worse...)

The vassalization requests from outside your area are a bug in DV. But it is fixed in the latest beta-patch, which I guess you do not have (or have not installed properly).

Install the beta-patch from October 2008, and all those annoying requests should stop.

Just to throw a Monkey Wrench into the works. Even with the Latest Beta Patch, once in a great while, the game will hic-cup and odd vassalization offers will come rolling in. All you can do at that point, is wait it out, keep saying no and eventually the game will wake up and correct itself.

Once you've accepted those offers, when those distant vassals break away, you end up with a free Claim on those titles. And that claim makes those distant rulers more likely to want to be your vassals once again. So if you're going to do that 'Byzantine' cheat to get rid of them, make sure you give up those claims at the same time. You'll take a prestige hit, so only worth doing if your ruler is swimming in prestige.
