Hi,

I recently updated to Ubuntu 18.04 and started CK 2 via Steam. The launcher works, what seems to happen afterwards is that my OS user is logged off so I hardly can see the nice Paradox logo before being logged out. My system's log files show some kind of X server crash.

For what it is worth: EU IV at least takes me into the game so I can start the game setup. But at some point I am logged off as well. I use a Geforce 1070 GTX with proprietary 390ish drivers.

To add more info: the game runs perfectly with Unity as desktop environment, it seems there is a problem in connection with Gnome. Also, the logout happens when the game wants to load graphics. I noted that it is not in fullscreen mode by that time. I somehow suspect that there is a problem with the resolution. I think there is a file that holds this. Where can I find this file on Linux? Some threads hinted at a settings.txt file but I could not locate that inside Crusader Kings 2 folder.

If you are using Wayland now, that is the problem. You need to either move to Xorg, or disable sampling in settings.txt

The same symptoms don't necessarily mean the same root cause; it's always best to start your own fresh thread rather than Me Too someone else's.

In any case: this game did not change a few days ago, so what did? New driver, Linux update, change of UI?

Any other of our games affected or just this one?

Of course you're right, I apologize for that.

Before I first had the problems, there was the Ubuntu update to 18.04.01 (from 18.04.) But on the same day there was also a steam client update. Of course it is obvious that it is a related problem (driver). I reinstalled my Ubuntu, reinstalled the games, and updated the NVIDIA drivers. Unfortunately, all this did not help.

Any other of our games affected or just this one?
At the moment I have EU4 and CK2 installed (Pdox games), both are not working. Additional I have Total War Attila and Football Manager 17, I can play both games without any problems.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK2/settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ folder, attach system.log .

Also in Steam please click on Steam-Help-System Info, and paste everything there into a text file and attach that here.

No real issues in there I'm afraid. You are getting the logout issue mentioned in the OP, is that right? And the X server crash? Can you try switching from Gnome to Unity like they did?

Also, one thing I've seen before: the latest driver on the nVidia site for this card is 390.77 released only a couple of weeks ago:
http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/136120/en-us
Yet yours says 396.45 . Where is it from?

And what version of X.org do you have? I had one report of 1.20 causing problems for our games, but no others like that so far.

I have noticed that the games can be started in windowed mode, but then the mouse control does not work correctly. The moment I set it to full screen, it crashes again. I get the Paradox logo and in the next moment I am at the ubuntu login screen --> session chashed.

After the problem occurred I tried different drivers. But nothing has changed, no matter if I used 390.77 or 396.45. I got the drivers directly from NVidia.

Ubuntu no longer supports unity, you'd have to install it separately, which I don't want to do.

But obviously not from the place I linked ... 396.x is some experimental or beta version or something?

Is it out of registration perhaps? If so, that usually means the resolution is not one of the supported ones, which you can see listed at the end of the system.log file.

Unfortunately this cannot be the reason, according to the settings the resolution is supported.

I will check this today evening and I will also switch back to the last 390.XX. Thanks for your help, I'll update you later today.

I see, so in what way does the mouse control not work correctly?

It worked until a few days ago.
And for you, this also happened after going to Ubuntu 18.0.4 ? Used to work okay before that?Or what other change or update occurred between when this game last worked and first had this problem?

CK2 has always worked for me without any problems. Until the update from Ubuntu 18.04 to Ubuntu 18.04.01, there was also a steam client update on the same day.

In windowed mode, the mouse does not work because the mouse tracking is wrong, as if the screen settings were not correct. For example, you click on a button but in practice you click on the one below (an example).

Whereas for the OP here it was going to 18.04 apparently, although I suppose its possible he went straight to 18.04.01 without noticing.

Is there a way to revert to 18.04, to confirm that is the problem here?

I would have to reinstall my old ubuntu image and forbid any updates. If you already have 18.04, you will not be informed about the update to 18.04.01. The update to 18.04.01 was released at the end of July, so there is probably no correlation with the first post. I'll let you know when I have news
