AAR for 18-OCT
We started tonight on March1, 1939. Czechoslovakia decided wisely to join
with the Reich, but alas Poland refused Germany's reasonable demands. In a
defensive move, the Wehrmacht moved in to secure Poland against further
aggression. By September 15, Poland was in German hands.
While engaged on the Polish frontier, both France and Yugoslavia tried
desperately to invade sacred German soil from the West and South. Our brave boys repulsed the feeble attempts of the Franco-Slavic invaders. By
October, Guderian and Manstein were teaching the slavs a lesson about
modern warfare.
German troops, once again moving in defense, crossed the Yugoslavian
frontier. Bolstered by troops from Venezuela, Argentina, Turkey, and the
UK, the Allies once again made a feeble attempt at resisting the tighteous
troops of the Fatherland. One by one the Yugoslavian states fell until in
November Germany annexed the country. Seeing the inevitability of German
victory, Hungary joined the Axis.
Not giving the Allies any respite, Guderian's panzers crossed into Greece.
With his Panzercorps driving to Athens and Rundstedt's Infantry armies
driving on Salonika, Manstein briefly trapped a British army of 8 divisions
in western Greece. The fortified positions which the British were counting
on did nothing to slow the German advance. Luckily for Chamberlain they
slipped away by sea just hours before being annihilated. Pressing forward,
Rundstedt secured Istanbul from the Turks and began to fortify his
positions. All of Greece but Crete was in German hands.
Meanwhile in the air, the UK pressed a few attacks against German cities
only to be driven back by the Luftwaffe. In the Mediterranean, the
Kriegsmarine air arm continued to operate unopposed against Allied surface
fleets.
As winter deepened, the Soviets suddenly attacked Finland and pressed an
early advantage. Admiral Raeder continued to scout British convoy routes
without success with the Unterseebootes and the Wehrmacht began to deploy against the Franco-German border in the anticipation of more incursions.
January 1, 1940 had dawned.
