Even Stannis has tried to convince himself that he didn't really kill Renly, with limited success. But this last thing is pretty blatant, even if Stannis wins everything somehow, how is he going to rule when he has broken one of Westeros' biggest taboos?

Heh, Stannis did what all of us (in AGoT mod or anywhere else in CK2) have done many times. When we do it, it's just "That's CK2 for you!". When Stannis does it, it's "Fuck the king!".

Actually, even with my near 700 hours of gameplay in vanilla and various mods, I've never killed one of my kids. I've killed Siblings/uncles and other relatives, but never my children, even those who betray me just get banished. But most of my characters seem to be good guys b/c of the decisions I make so....

Well Shireen has pretty lousy stats and traits. One of the first priorities as Stannis is to get rid of her and Selyse and give him the family he deserves as the one true King and feeding them to the Lord of Light works for that purpose. Even if it makes Stannis a bit unpopular.

He should've taken the Seduction focus and made some bastards with Melisandre or taken the War focus to better help his Martial skill

The bigger problem than the infanticide I think is that Stannis now has no heir. I mean, is it worth it to get the Iron Throne and then when you die there is no one of your family to inherit?

Well if Cersei's bastards are dead the options would be a. legitimizing one of Roberts in the books it would be Edric show Gendry(???) bastards b. Dany who with Dragons may look a tempting option c. an elective monarchy HRE style.

Well, she was a girl. That's not much of an heir in a patrolinear society.

She would have still inherited the throne and Stannis may have married her to a LP to ensure she has support against any immediate challengers.

The point is, in the books Stannis is hundreds of miles away from Shireen and the most recent chapter we see him in, he is ordering Justin Massey to hire mercs in Essos with the Iron Banks cash with the explicit orders "even if you hear of my death, I expect you to continue fighting and crown Shireen".
But you know, whatever he's definitely planning on burning her because apparently GRRM told some hacks it would happen.

They never said he would do it.

Personally I like to play as Stannis. He's an interesting character and as his goals are not so clear, so I can roleplay easily. It's funnier to play as him than as the Tyrells, Martels, or many of the great families in Westeros. Of course you can hate him, but he's more interesting than Jon Snow I think.

I also like to play as Ironborns (especially Farwynd and Harlaw) ans Arryn (yes, Robert Arryn), so I may not be very representative of what the book or the show lovers like. I still have to play as a Cregane.

Usually in my games I wed Shireen to Harry the Heir to secure the Vale, and Selyse gets herself to hang out with the Lord of Light, and I wed Sansa because Stannis needs a son and heir, and northern armies. Stannis is one of the most interesting characters to play in mod.

As far as show and books go, Stannis gets too much hate. Writers of the show mentioned few times that Stannis is their least favorite character, so there's no wonder they want to share that feeling with the viewers.
Personally, I don't hate him because he burned Shireen, yes I felt sorry for her and it was horrible, but it was necessary sacrifice from his POV (TV-Stannis). I expect the same will occur in the books (AFAIK it was Martin's idea) but in different light (heh), of course. Selys and Mel will burn Shireen on the Wall and Stannis will give Mel and Selyse a chance to hang out with the LoL because of what they did.

When I think about it the only time I killed a relative was after Dany as Queen of Westeros died and her son inherited.

Aegon her husband went totally "THE IRON THRONE IS MINE!!!!" and left for Braavos to find an army.

There was no other way to secure the realm.

You've never had to deal with the horrors of gavelkind getting ready to split the realm when a Crusade is already underway.
