Something is causing the heir to change from one daughter to another, when the heir is not dead. Is this some strange plot I have not uncovered, or do I need to murder my other children to ensure the one in proper line of succession remains heir?

This doesn't seem right. The high priority "you will now play as xyz" is coming up for no good reason that I can tell.

Edit: Now confirmed a bug with the game.

Zip of 3 save games, ~17MB: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/29725782/CKII/Heir-bug.zip

Steps to reproduce, Steam version, Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.

Load this game: Rus1199_07_22 - DoNotDelete.ck2

Heir is Catherine.

At the start of every month, save the game using either Quick Save or manual Save Game.

Then, go to the character screen after each save and the current heir is displayed, still Catherine.

On Oct 25th, 1099 the notification the heir has changed appears. But, the heir is not dead. You can fast foward to Dec 1st, allowing everything in the game to get updated, and Catherine is still alive.

This is where it gets interesting and how to reproduce.

Reload the Oct 1st save, and the heir is no longer Catherine. But it showed up as Catherine during play and when making the save game.

Go back and reload Sep 1st save, and the heir is no longer Catherine. But it showed up as Catherine during play and when making the save game.

Go back to the orignal save labeled Rus1199_07_22 - DoNotDelete.ck2 and the heir is Catherine, correctly.

Something is happening in the game to cause the heir to change, without any justification being presented to the player, and when saving the game, it's saving the heir incorrectly?

Solution: Murder your unwanted children. LOL!

Game is still bugged, 55 hours of play time spent over 148 years, and I'm pleading for some cheat or fix to the No Heir bug - help!

The only thing I did was continue this game after applying the patch 1.03 off Steam.

I thought killing off the surviving children, and my wife, after reloading from an earlier save would make sure that I had a "clean heir" going forward.

And it worked or so I thought. My eldest daughter had incredible stats, btw. :) I killed off my only son to make sure she inherited!

Now playing as Queen and on the 4th character, my first born was female. Drat! I can deal with this, though. I get to experience all the different plots and flavor text. Second born, another girl.

When I became pregnant again, it turned out to be a son. Viola! No Heir warning pops up, if I die the game ends. Hovering over the portrait for my son it says Heir to the Kingdom of Rus.

Can I cheat my way out of this to carry on my conquest of Europe? If so, what commands do I need if someone looks at my save games? Or can my save game be edited with the right info?

Here's the approach I can take with this...

- Reload to an earlier save before I get preggers, kill off husband and take a black widow approach (once you make a couple children, kill off the husband/wife)
- Use a cheat to switch succession laws and see if this "fixes" whatever got muxed up
- Use a cheat to manually assign the heir

I have had a tremendous amount of fun with this game, basically the first one I started after going through a 10 hour practice game in Sicily.

But I hate to see it all flushed down the tubes if I can't restore this to normal working order.

The first case is not a bug, though the rule is a bit obscure. Here's what happens:
You have Agnatic-Cognatic succession, which means Male Preference. When your younger daughter gets a son, your older daughters are bypassed in the line of succession because they have not yet produced any sons. I.e. the system wants the son of your daughter Pereyaslava to become king eventually.

The second case is not a bug either. You have a regular marriage, not a matrilineal one, which means that your son is not of your dynasty, which means Game Over should he inherit.

Ok, this makes sense that as Queen marriage laws still follow the Father's dynasty even though you're the player character and my son must die. And I can work on converting the succession laws leveraging Basque and tutoring. Thank you for the feedback!
