Just a small question...

Do colonies count when having to hold all of the territories of a country to militarily annex them? I know that trading posts don't count and any colonies up to the city stage are of course counted as normal provinces.

colonies yes, TPs no. As well, make sure it doesn't control (not necessarily own) one of its ennemy's province.

indeed. Best bet is to do it early before they start colonizing like crazy. After 1500s or so, their colonial dynamism dies off leaving them with not many colonists a year. But before that date they get like 10 colonists a year.

I think that colonies only count if they have >700 people in the main city. Otherwise, they are treated like trade posts in terms of peace discussions and forced annexation.

really? have to be lvl 7? I don't think so. from memory (only memory) Ihad to captur lvl 1 or 2 colonies in order to annex. But, looking at your post count, I'll gladly submit

I guess we'll find out if those pesy Portugese Colonies under level 7 count. They have some that are level 6 and some that are level 1's and 2's.

I've only observed Portugal in IGC, and in not that many games because I've been playing inland folks like Brandenburg and Russia until lately, but I've never seen Portugal as being too difficult. because they can explore so widely so early, in all the games where I've observed their 'overseas empire', by the mid-1500s they have scads of little trading posts and 2 - 3 level colonies everywhere, but not enough colonists to build up many of them to Colonial Cities. This makes their Empire effectively indefensible, and it crumbles pretty fast.
In my current game as England (game date: 1580s), the Turks appear to have shoved Portugal out of most of Africa, grabbing their only colonial city in Table. In South America, I've been pillaging down the coast burning trading posts and have yet to come across a colony big enough to build a fort and defend itself: they aren't going to last long at this rate...

<700 population don`t count

I annexed the Iroqouis earlier today, controlling only two provinces - all the others were level 6 colonies. Caught me by surprise, cos I was expecting just to bilk them out of some gold

This might only work for ROTW countries, but I don't see why it should...

Colonies that are less than level 7 shouldn't be required for annexation for any countries. This is because, like trade posts, controlling them doesn't give you any stars.

That means it is even more important for a country to get some colonies up to 700 people!

I'll have to agree with Dark Knight. When I was at war with Aden, I only took their capital, yet I got 7 stars for full military annexation even when they still had two colonies <700 which I hadn't touched.
