Title says it all really - the prestige cost to grab a title can vary enormously and I just wondered what factors are taken into account in deciding that. Prestige of the current holder?

The prestige cost is determined by the province-income and by the difficulty-level you are playing. f.e. on Very Hard the prestige cost for a county is 4 times higher then on normal.

For king and duke-titles it depends on the number of vassals and titles of the same level that ruler has.

Since province-income fluctuates so does the prestigecost.

You can also throw in - If you are a Rival to that Ruler, the prestige cost is halved. And of course, if the Ruler is Excommunicated, it's a pittance of the former cost (guessing 5% or so?).

Hmm this is interesting. I play a lot as Leon and Castille adn I've seen Navarra/Aragon go from 2000 to 2500 to 3000 and then down to 1000.

The only difference I ever noticed was my prestige became a lot higher and my holding became much greater. But if income plays a role then I'm assuming he got some diseases as well as some revolts to ruin province income. IDK any comment?

Yes that is most likely the case
