I have read through most of the manual, read through a bit of this forum, but I am still confused. Can a land province be opened up to view by a ship going by it? What are the requirements of the ship?

Any answers would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

Yes, it can. It's a random factor though, so you must move your explorer back and forth several times until you get to see all the coastal provinces you pass.

My take on this...

Yes, only explorers can discover from sea zones. Another way is to land a conquistador (or army unit with the right tech level) from any ship.

Note: An explorer looks just like an ordinary ship except that it has a special symbol next to the leader. The first time I played Portugal I had no idea I started with explorers.

Hehe....the way I do it is I annex a minor country , and receive their maps. They might not have all the world , but it can help you out.

What's ahistorical about annexing say Venice and getting their maps? You can also get maps from naval battles, win or lose I think. I'd think that most of the minors have very limited maps at least until later in the game. No, you can't purchase them.

Another great way is to go diplomatic and just exchange maps (I think it's called exchange discoveries or something, it's the last option anyway).

I colonized all of the South side of the persian gulf that way. Made nice with Persia, asked to exchange maps and kaplow! instant free and empty provinces.

This is what I did:

Exchanged maps with Moscow, got the location of some eastern powers.
Exchange maps with them, got some more locations of more eastern provinces and capitals, exhcnage maps with... well you get the idea.

I always had more knowledge then them, but hey they had knowledge I wanted badly, so I was willing to exchange 400 sea and land zones for 20. Providing the 20 gave me access to another power.

I always have more discoveries than the minor nations, but I figure they can't really use the knowledge I have, but I can use theirs. Aden is not likely to start sending fleets to the New World but I can sure use their maps of the Persian Gulf.

Plus if you have one of the major colonizers you should get explorers fairly often. As England i just send the rookies out on the high seas and see how far they get before it says *plums* :).

With 5-6 explorers i have most of the route to India, and even most of the Pacific Ocean covered.

Don't worry about them dieing btw, there will be new adventerous fools waiting around the corner :). You might want to micromanage the really good explorers more because they have very good staying power and can explore vast areas(people like Cook for instance).
