Let's talk about Pontus. You can form Pontus via either playing as Pontus or Kios to start off as, but that's not the whole picture. The real Pontus (with all of its features) can only be formed by event chain. Before 2.0, this was very unlikely to happen, but it was definitely possible though it took quite a lot of waiting and luck. Basically you would play as Pontus (not Kios) and wait until Mithridates moves to Paphlagonia, and then wait until Mithridates comes to Pontus, and then you got the few things which makes Pontus unique, which are the Sinope and Amaseia Capital buff and the Hellenistic Omens.

That no longer works. One of the reasons you could never form Pontus (with all the unique flavor) as Kios, was because the decision to form Pontus does not change your tag to PON (which is what is required by both of the special Pontic decisions) but for some reason to PTU (why?). This was not a big deal, because you could get all the unique Pontic flavor by starting as Pontus instead of Kios. Now the devs have added a flag which requires you to start as Kios to get the unique Pontic flavor, but you can't get the unique Pontic flavor because those decisions require you to have the PON tag, which can you never get as Kios. Which means that it is currently impossible to get the unique Pontic flavor without editing the game files. This is an oversight, which can be easily fixed (literally just changing PTU to PON in the pontic decisions file fixes it.) If that was my only grievance, I'd just file a bug report and call it a day.

The same thing is true for the Hellenistic Omens, the game requires your tag to be "PON" and for you to have the greco-pontic traditions flag, which is not possible right now. Kios can get the Greco-Pontic traditions flag and Pontus starts with the "PON" tag, but neither can obtain the other piece necessary to actually have Selene and Zeus Stratios as Omens.

Let's talk about culture. You can start as Pontus and remain Cappadocian, you can start as Kios and flee to Paphlagonia and become Paphlagonian, and you can start as Kios, invade Paphlagonia and stay Propontic. None of these options allow you to become Pontic culture, which is what I want to do. I just think that's lame.

I don't really like how Kios can start with access to all Greek military traditions and then lose access to them if the primary culture becomes Paphlagonian. It's also not very convenient, because while you can from Greek traditions to Persian traditions easily, its much harder the other way because you have to go from Persian to Levantine to Greek, and that requires having a sizable amount of pops in those groups (closest of which is Syria). Surely Kios becoming Pontus should be an exception of some kind. The whole point of the Pontic decisions is the mingling of Persian, Anatolian, and Hellenic cultures.

What's the deal with the Mithridatic heritage? Is it supposed to be a permanent heritage for the country, or just a boon to help Kios establish the Kingdom of Pontus? I honestly prefer the Pontic heritage, so I don't really like not being able to choose it when playing as Kios and trying to establish the kingdom.

I really like playing as the Mithridatic kingdom of Pontus, and I really love the care and attention that has gone into improving Pontus over the updates, but I think it's clear that the successive updates while amazing and awesome on their on, are not functional with each other; Less than careful integration of the succesive additions to Pontus' uniqueness is probably what led to the oversight that makes its impossible to get the Pontic decisions and Pontic omens. For my own part, I am quite capable of making a personal mod that fixes these issues for me, but I wanted to point out the current inconsistencies that currently arise when trying to recreate the Mithridatic kingdom of Pontus.

Yup just tried a game as Kios and it was disappointing for all the reasons you mentioned.

Also the 'Ktistes' achievement is blocked out for Kios and still blocked out even when I formed Pontus. It seems you have to enact the decision to 'Form Pontus' as Kios rather than form Pontus as Kios through the event chain, which is a shame as its a fun chain.

I just carried on playing - an event fires which will unlock the 'move capital to Sinope' and 'Greco-Pontic omens' decisions!

Still no idea about the 'Ktistes' achievement though, maybe it's WAD?

This was in the hotfix today, I hope they fixed the tag issue at least, but doesn't necessarily say so. I agree with all your grievances so I hope they will do Pontus justice!

I think this has been largely fixed. I started as Kios, got the event to become Mithrandic Kingdom and fought a war with Paphlagonia, then got an event to annex and become Pontus, and eventually got the event to allow the me to unlock the greco pontic omens and move the capital. All appears to be working

Did you actually get the decisions to show up? I got the event that said I would unlock the decisions but the decisions never appeared.

You have to get both events. The event which says you can unlock the decisions requires you to start as Kios, but unless you get the event to annex Pontus peacefully, nothing will come of it.

That event requires you and Pontus to both exist and be at peace, so if you conquered Pontus but never received this event, you screwed yourself.

I tried a kios game cuz of this post. Any idea what to restart for so Mithradates actually flees the court?
EDIT nevermind just as I hit post, Lyschimaus killed my dad and I became Mithridates
EDIT2: So some pointers. Flip to mercantile stance day 1 for increased income. Flip back to neutral stance when mithridatic kingdom as your traditions give you one less relations slot.
Your trade routes will be lost often, due to jumping capitals, so don't care too much about them. Someone else can do the maths on if they're worth it or not.
You and pontus need to be at peace to inherit him, but you could fabricate claims meanwhile, as forming pontus via event doesn't give you the claims forming pontus normally would
Phyrgia gave land to Thrace for peace, but Egypt was able to take Antioch so the event Antigonid Cause Wavers did fire, whereas the wiki says reset if Thrace gets land. It was while a tributary of Thrace that I got the event for the ruler of kios dying.

Are you able to get those decisions? Even I got the even which suposed me to allow these decisions, they never pop up in the decisions' window. I do not think it still fixed.

I was able to take all decisions but in my run I had to actually fully conquer Pontus in order to form it. Pontus refused the proposal to put Mithridates on the throne so I conquered them in the ensuing war. Probably this is why it worked in May case. However I had to remain Paphlagonian for all the game.
