"All wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers"

-Francois Fenelon

December 25th, 1935

It's Christmas Eve. I can't focus on that though. I report for basic training the day after tommorow. Boy, am I excited! Ma thinks I'm crazy, but this is a chance to join my brother at Fort Bragg.

Steve was interrupted by his mother coming into the room. "Steven? It's time for supper." she exclaimed. Steve showed a slight frown. "Okay, Ma."

December 27th, 1935

Dad deicided to take me to the airport in his car. I can't wait to see John. I haven't seen him in two years. Dad gave me a few words of encourgement before I left on the plane. "Son, I'll be waiting in my chair by the fireplace for you. See you soon."

December 28th, 1935

Dear Dad, I met up with my brother in the mess hall, even though we've been assinged to different units. He said he was real proud of me, that I am a natural soldier. The drill sargent seems to think very highly of me, at least for now. You'd love these guys, dad. Josh Ackman is our corpsman. Apparently he dropped out of med school to join the army. Kevin "Cutter" Feron is a deeply religious guy. At first I thought he was the padre! Jason Matthews is an oddball. He showed me his stamp collection. He has stamps from the civil war. He said his grandfather passed them on to him. Jack Parker... what to say about him?

The drill sargent busted into the room. "Okay, ladies! We're going to Firearms training, now! You will follow me and only me! Understood?!"

"Yes drill sargent!"

Well dad, I have to close now tell mom I love her, and I miss you both already. Farewell for now.

-Your son, Steven

Sorry it's not much, but I have to start the game. Will update soon!

Feburary 28th, 1936

Dear Dad, I know it's been two months since I've written, but they have been driving us hard. I guess you've already heard about the President's "New Reconstruction". The others brag that it'll make us all rich when we get out of the service, but I don't know what Roosevelt's using these new factories for, or what he's trying to accomplish trading with other countries. Anyway, we got our new rifles in today. Alot better than the old Springfields. I don't think I ever told you about Jack. He's our squad leader. He's usually quiet, but he can be very disarming at times. He served in the Great War alongside General Pershing, but he never talks about it. So I hope everyone home is doing okay I wish the best to you and Ma.

-Your son, Steven

At lunch, Steve joined his squadmembers in the mess tent and sat down. "Oh, goody. Slop again." Steve said faciously. "It's actually quite good. Well, good for you, anyway..." answered Josh. "You hear?" blurted Jack, "Germans are stacking up along the Rhine River. Rumor is they plan to reclaim the lands along the river."

March 8th, 1936

"So the Krauts went ahead and did it..." repeated Jack for about the tenth time. "Relax, man. It's not like we're at war." This statement lit the powder keg. Jack grabbed Jason by the neck, lifting him up off of the floor. "You know what's gonna happen, private?" he questioned. "I'll tell ya what's gonna happen. Britain and France are gonna sit by, watching, while Germany expands. When the time is right, Boom! Germany strikes France with all she's got and another war starts!" Jack finally let Jason go, sat down on his bed and looked at the floor.

March 21st, 1936

Dear Dad, I imagine you will get the news in the next few days. John has shipped out. He's headed for some obscure island in the Pacific called "Midway". I sure am gonna miss him. I imagine you've heard about the death of George Dern, one of the U.S. ambassadors to Europe. Jack says the series of events this month is "the begining of the end". I sure hope he's wrong...

Nice start. Keep it up. USA 1936 can be boring at times, but stick with it. It gets fun later. :)

May 22nd, 1936

A loud banging sound awoke the squad from their sleep. "Rise and shine, ladies!" They all immediatly jumped up and stood at attention. "At ease! I have good news for ya! You men have been chosen for a very special honor. You shall be the first unit in the U.S. Army to recieve the 50 mm infantry artillery and the mortar of the same round. As such, you shall recieve training in these weapons starting today. I want to see you all outside in 3 minutes in full uniform!" With that, the sargent slammed the door. The squadmates just looked at each other for about ten seconds, half asleep. As the squad got ready, Kevin blurted out a good question. "Whose idea is it to rearm the military now?" Jack immediatly gave an answer. "Apparently, some guy in Washington name Eisenhower. D. C. senses danger out there... and so do I."
Steve thought about that for a second, then walked outside to join Josh and Jason.

More to come..... when war starts, the posts will probably get longer.

June 20, 1936

As the squad march back to their quarters after a hard day, one staff sargent pulled Steve from the column, and instructed him to follow. He brought Steve up to the office of Colonel "Gray" Sutherland, their direct commanding officer, and motioned Steve to go inside. Steve had a bad feeling about this. Was he to be sent back home? Could he never enlist again? As he stepped inside, the colonel let out a yell. "You!" Steve felt like an ice pick had just jabbed in his stomach. The colonel approached and smiled. "You, my friend... how would you like to go see your family for your birthday?" He totally forgot that his birthday was the 23rd of June. He tried to open his mouth to speak, but he felt like a cork was blocking his throat. "At ease, Mr. Edwards." Gray reassured him. Steve finally got up the strength to open his mouth. "Yes... Yes, Sir. I would like that very much." "Good! Because you have a flight to Oregon in the morning. Here's your ticket. I wanted to give it to you myself for all the progress you've been showing. Now, Dismissed!" Steve promptly saluted the colonel and rushed out of the room to the barracks.

June 21st, 1936

Steve walked up to the house that had been his home for 19 years. He stalled for a second, than rang the doorbell. His mother slowly opened the door, than began; "Steven, darling! Come in, come in." He saw his father sitting in his chair by the fireplace, reading the newspaper. He walked up to him, and his father, not even lowering the paper said to him, "Turn around."
He did just that, and looked into the eyes of his brother. Speechless, he ran up to him and hugged him greatly.

Cool!

July 22nd, 1936

The news spread slowly in Fort Bragg. Jack's squad heard about it four days later. The Spaniards had a civil war on their hands. Steve could only wonder. Why would man want to settle any dispute or controversy by shooting one another? he asked himself. July 18th would go down as the one match that started an inferno. Kevin took a second to give a blessing to those who would soon pass. It came to no one’s surprise that Germany and Italy had sent supplies to the Nationalists. The U.S.S.R. had sent assistance to the Republicans. However, as Jack had feared, Britain and France had sent no help to the Republicans. Franco had already captured Madrid. It was now only a matter of time.

September 30th, 1936

“The Spanish Civil War Rages On ” was on page two of the U.S. Army papers. On page one was the christening of the new aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Yorktown. It was to be held in San Diego, with the president himself making an appearance. “Wow...” whispered Steve as he read the article. “This seat taken?” Steve looked up and saw Josh. “No, please, have a seat.” Josh sat down and began, “Ya hear yet? There are four more of those things starting production tomorrow.”

November 4th, 1936

Steve awoke to the sound of the radio. “Huh? Turn that thing off! It’s the middle of the night!” Steve said in a raised voice. “I beg your pardon my friend, but it’s 0700 hours. Rise and shine!” It was Kevin’s high tone. “You shouldn’t stay up so late listening to the election. You’ll regret it in the morning.” “Oh, sorry Kev. Who won, anyway? Last I remember Roosevelt had the lead.” He asked with wonder. “And he kept that lead, he won. I guess those new industries brought more money to the consumers, and that in turn brought more votes. Now, wake up and let’s get some grub.”

January 2nd, 1937

The new year didn't get off to a great start. Today, Italy had annexed the small african nation Ethiopia. The small army of Ethiopians had held off Musolinni for over a year, but it wasen't enough. On the Home Front, new designs of airplanes were coming off the drawing board, along with new types of naval vessels and even more new factories were ordered by Roosevelt. All this, most of the servicemen thought, was only to improve the economy, which it was. However, some in D.C. could picture the oncoming war.

June 22nd, 1937

Steve sure got a birthday suprise when he woke up. The Nationalists had finally defeated the Republicans in the civil war happening across the Atlantic. But as Jack had said; "This is the wind change before a great storm." Another birthday gift was getting to see the dive bombers practice their new techniques. In Puerto Rico. He was shipped out along with his squad the day before yesterday. He woulden't usually mind going to an island were it's sunny all year 'round, but having an entire continent seperating him and his brother made him feel a little down. At least he still had his squadmates.

July 13th, 1937

"It's amazing. After a great Independence Day, we have to hear about this! One war ends, another begins!" Jack had explained to the others about what happened in the early morning at a place called Marco Polo Bridge in China. A small miscommunication had lead to war between the Empire of Japan and the Chinese. Not just the Nationalist Chinese, but all of china was now engulfed in turmoil.

August 8th, 1937

Steve had sat down on his bed after a hot day in the sun. Soon, the others returned, talking about China. Steve was barely listening, for he was exhausted. "What do you think about it, Steve?" asked one of them. Steve didn't know who. "About what?" was the reply. "About the act Congress passed today. The Pitman Act." Steve did not know what they were blabbing about. "Congress has deicided to help out the Chinese, though they are not actually saying they are." Steve did not hear this. He had drifted into a dreamless sleep.

Oct 4th, 1937

Steve skimmed through the article in the papers about the recent "Anti-Comintern Pact". "In retaliation to Operation Zet (The USSR assistance to Nationalist China), Germany, Italy, and Japan formed a mutual protection pact if one was attacked by the communists." Steve just shook his head and turned the page.

November 22nd, 1937

Word had reached Fort Bragg of the Japanese capture of the Chinese capital of Nanjing. But that wasen't the disturbing news. Japanese soldiers were pillaging, raping, and murdering in the streets of Nanjing. Kevin had become almost a recluse after hearing it. "How could they do such inhumane things to these people? Are they not human?!"

Office of Dwight Eisenhower, March 7th, 1938

"Sir, the new carriers are ready for production at Congress' approval. The new aircraft and naval designs are ready for review by your research department as well. Also, the five infantry divisions ordered by Congress should be deployed on the west coast by the end of this month." Ike had a grim look on his face. "Thank you, lieutanant. That will be all." The lieutenant saluted and walked out of the office. "If war is to come..." Ike began to himself, "This nation must be ready for it..."

Office of Dwight Eisenhower March 21st, 1938

A staff sargent knocked on the door to Ike's office and, before he could get a response, rushed in and handed the general a paper. "Germany and Austria have signed a pact, sir! Austria's agreed to be part of Germany!" Ike could only stare at the wall.

San Juan Puerto Rico

For servicemen all across the U.S., the response wasn't great either. Especially for Jack Parker. The talk shifted from speculation to certainty about a new war. The setting became darker in the barracks. The three thousand man garrison on Puerto Rico became a very gloomy place to be.

June 10th, 1938

All the papers were talking about the four new carriers commisoned in the last 2 months. The Wasp and Hornet, assinged to the Pacific, are being called "The Killer Bees of the U.S. Navy". The Essex and the Enterprise have been assinged to the Atlantic Fleet, where they will be quite welcome. Steve didn't even read the article. He could not help but stare at the photographs of the montrous ships. "I wonder how much those things cost..."

June 24th, 1938

Steve's birthday bad luck streak continues. Today, John B. Moore, the American ambassador to Japan, has died. So far, the White House has concentrated on Germany. But what about the power-hungry Japanese in Asia?

Good AAR

Excellent AAR, it was disappointing not to be able to read more now! Certainly an original style.. I may be "forced" to take it into account when I finally do an AAR  ;) (I've been thinking diary entries of an Officer mixed with newspaper reports)

Thanks for all the great comments, guys!

September 30th, 1938

Dear Dad, Alot of news this week. I'm not sure if you've heard that the cheif of the Air Force, Oscar Westover, has died. Henry H. Arnold is the new commander. Today, the rumors are that Germany has annexed the Studenland from Czechoslovakia in something they are calling "The Treaty of Munich". And again, Britain and France aren't doing much to stop them. Oh yes, they shipped us out again. We're now stationed in Fort Hamilton in New York City. Most of the other guys are used to the big city, but being from Oregon, it's a big change. Rearming of the military continues. I can't help but wonder if the brass knows something we don't.

March 30th, 1939

As the year opened, yet another string of facist victories plauged this month. On the 15th, Germany annexed the rest of the Czechs and gave Slovakia it's independence. On the 25th and 26th, Hitler claimed the Lithuanian province of Memel for Germany. Also, Mussolini and facist Italy declared war on the tiny nation of Albania. The only bright spot in all this is that Poland had joined Britain and France in their alliance today. All the U.S. servicemen had hoped that would make Germany think twice about futher unprovoked expansion.

May 5th, 1939

Things keep getting harder and harder for the president of the United States. Not only had Albania been annexed on April 30th, but today, The president's law policies had come under fire from his political opponents. It's too late to comprimise however, and Roosevelt can only soak it in.

July 8th, 1939

The Chief of the Navy, Claude M. Swanson, would see his final Independence day this year. He had passed on early in the morning. The president chose Charles Edison as the new Navy Chief.

Germany is tightening it's grip on Europe...
Italy on the Mediterranean Sea...
And who could forget Japan? Far to the East...
