Where do I save downloads to?

This is probably a really stupid question but in my defence I'm new to Hearts of Iron 2 and a complete 'no hoper' with computers.

Having said that I've now had a few experimentation runs with the game to see what does what, etc and now feel ready to play for 'real' but would like to do so with the most up to date version.

When I go to download the 1.3a patch, its defaulting to save in 'My Documents' which is obviously wrong (I think) and I've changed it the Hearts of Iron 2 folder. Is this right? Or should put it into one of the sub folders?

I've read through the Tech Support posts but no one else seems to have asked.

Sorry again if this is a stupid question!
 
I usually have it set up like this.
On the drive I have the the most space free, I set up a folder called Downloads, then I make sub folders in that folder, one Called "games" one called "utilities" and any other catagory that helps you organize the downloads.
Then create a HOI2 folder in Downloads/Games/
Then save the Patch to that folder.
 
Is it .exe or .rar? If it's .exe just doubleclick and install.
If it's .rar, copy it to your main hoi2 folder (where the hoi2.exe file is in) and extract it there with a tool like winrar.
 
1.3a is a program that you must run by double clicking on it.
Just browse to the folder you downloaded it in and double click on the Icon, it will then install itself.
1.3B is a compressed set of filesin a format called "rar" that you need to extract(uncompress) "unrar". You need athird party program to do that like winrar that I use.
You can get it for free from a site like tucows.

You need to install 1.3a before 1.3b, which is just an AI update.
 
Well lets get 1.3a installed first that is the main one and the easiest.
 
I'm making slow but steady progress!

I've successfully downloaded and installed the 1.3a patch and the game works fine. I know the patch is being used by the game as I've noticed some differences, mainly that the number of capital ships/screens appears when you hover over a fleet, fairly sure that didnt happen before.

I've also now registered with a site to download WinRAR but I'm having a few problems with that as nothing happens when I click on the download button. I've raised a query with their support line and hopefully they can help me sort that out.

Where do I find the 1.3b file? I've looked under the download page but can only see 1.3b, 1.3, etc
 
I am not that good with computers either. I tried to install 1.3 b and here's what I did. I downloaded the 1.3b rar-file from this forum. I then downloaded Winrar and installed it. Then I extracted the rar file to C:\Program files\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron 2 folder (the default folder when you install HOI2).

Could someone please tell me if I got the installation right or not. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Oh, by the way Jedi_Nites, you will find the 1.3b file from a sticky thread in the main forum. The title of the thread is AI Enhancement for 1.3.

Right, firstly thanks very much Grillmeister for that web address for WinRAR, I now have it downloaded (as a trial) and as I'll probably never have to use it again I think I spent £26.99 on that other site for nothing. Doh!

And thank you very much as well Gaute65 for the link to the 3b download, which I have now also downloaded to my HOI2 folder.

I extracted the file, well the 5 files it showed when I double clicked on it and the WinRAR window opened up. I extracted them all to the HOI2 folder.

I am now going to follow the previous link you put up about fixing the ussr.txt file.

Keep your fingers crossed for me please!

Glad we could help. When you start up the game it will show 1.3a in the upper right corner. Thats because there is no exe change in 1.3b, To be sure that you have updated correctly, check the jap.ai file. It should have the date 17/12. Path to file is: ..\Hearts of Iron2\ai

I would be really grateful if you would confirm that the things I have done are correct as the files I've opened and the contents therein have been really technical and to be honest, I struggled but hoped for the best.

Firstly, I moved the ussr.txt file from the db/events folder right out of the HOI2 folder altogether and somewhere else entirely. I then copied the linked ussr.txt file into the db/events folder.

Next I went into the scenarios folder and clicked on the sov_41 folder and scrolled down until I found the ground_def_eff line (about 1/20th of the way down) and changed that to 0.400.

I continued to scroll down but didnt see any other ground_def_eff lines.

I then went into the ai to check the jap file (there are 4, 1936, 1939, 1941 and 1944), only the 1936 showed a date of 17.12.05 when I hovered the mouse over it.

Does all this sound ok?
