I'm a newbie, heh I haven't even finished the tutorial yet. This is because it wouldn't let me attack other players. I could move around the map fine. Attack natives. But I couldn't attack fellow players. I'd try to move troops into a province and the little x would appear and nothign else. I made sure I was at war with the folks, and I had a very large army. ect. But no good. Anyone have any ideas?

Oh and...all your base are belong to us :p

i read elsewhere on the board that you need at least as many men as the fortification level of the province you're attacking before you can move in. ie a minimal fortification means you needs at least 5,000 troops.
hope this helps...

Actually it seems like
Minimum is 50%
Cover force 60%
Siege force 120%

This while not counting enemy artillery while 10 own artillery = 1000 men.

Thus enemy level 2 fortress (10.000 troops)

minimum 5000
Coverforce 6000+
Siege force 12000+

No, but it does say you have to be in war to enter enemy territory. This is also quite selfevident if one knows history, which is probably why they failed to stress it a bit more in the manual. It's quite a modern 20th century thing to first attack and then, mayby, declare war. Wasen't done that way back then.

Go to the diplomacy map, select the nation you want to declare war on, and you'll find a range of diplomatic options available including 'declare war' (assuming you have at least one diploat available). When you choose 'declare war', you'll get a confirmation window listing the stability penalty incurred. You can then choose to either go ahead or cancel.

You can also just rightclick the country and and choose to declare war from the context menue. Works the same way as the above method.

I ran into a similar problem while playing the tutorial.

What happened was, I got to the point where it tells you to assemble 25,000 men in some province. I was allied with Catalunya. But by the time I got the men together, which apparently triggered the war between Catalunya and the Mameluks, the alliance had expired. I figured, OK, fine, I'll offer them a new alliance. Catalunya accepted the alliance, but then I was absolutely, positively unable to do anything which would put me at war with the Mamelukes. The 'Declare War' option for diplomacy was greyed out, despite plenty of diplomats. When I hovered the mouse over it, it popped up something like 'You may not declare war on the Mamelukes again until <insert present game month>.' So if I hovered over the disabled 'Declare War' in, say February 1530, it said '...until February 1530.'

I claimed their throne two or three times, getting relations to -200, but it didn't help. Nor could I break the alliance with Catalunya. I tried breaking the royal marriage. They didn't seem to care.

Nothing seemed to happen in the Mameluke/Catalunyan war over a period of ten years or more while I sat there unable to do anything. The alliance seemed to be eternally renewed, as has been documented in another thread. I tried to save the game, only to discover this feature is disabled in the tutorial. I finally had to quit after spending about 10 hours playing the game, because there was literally nothing I could do to advance the game. A rather sour ending to what was otherwise a very enjoyable test drive.

It seems like if you make a military alliance with somebody who is already at war, you should be at war with their enemies. Or the game should prevent you from making an alliance with a country which is at war.

By the way, on a separate topic, I too noticed one of my cities going up in flames for no apparent reason and with no obvious effect. This was a city in the New World, with no other units within thousands of miles. I figured maybe it was some kind of pirate raid, but there was never an indication that something had happened to the city. I left a garrison there and once the flames went away only to come back a fairly short time later.

Yea i have got the same problem on the tutorial too. 'cept i didnt build the 25k men, i just went aheah n vasalised catayalan(?) and now i cant declare war on the bluddy turks :( sick of playing the tutorial again :( did it twice already, once it crashed n now i cant complete it :(

Just drop the tutorial and go straight for the GC...try as Russia first...then after an hour or two you'll probably have done so many mistakes that you'd want to start over (I sure did that my first time :) and that's probably a good idea...

That way you learn the game and enjoy yourself at the same time :)
