ok so previously.....i have changed campaign starting mechs including the players mech.
i have successfully replaced them with mechs from vanilla AND from mods.

now with 1.8 i wanted to change things so i started with a PHX, VLT and ASN.
did what i always did but all i get is infinite loading loop after setting difficulty and hitting start.

i dont get it......what changed?

did you check to make sure you didn't leave out a " or , ? also did you confirm that what you used are the correct file names? I won't be able to get the update downloaded till some time later tonight so I can't offer up more specific advice.

It should stil be as easy as editing lines 733-739 of SimGameConstants.json.

However I had to help another MechWarrior that had mixed up the spelling of the Phoenix Hawk, writing PHX instead of PXH...

The Phoenix Hawk is
mechdef_phoenixhawk_PXH-1
mechdef_phoenixhawk_PXH-1K

The Assassin is
mechdef_assassin_ASN-21
mechdef_assassin_ASN-101

The Vulcan is
mechdef_vulcan_VL-2T
mechdef_vulcan_VL-5T

i use notepad++ it helps you avoid stuff like that
and yes i looked at mechdef list

One thing to keep in mind is that now with official mod support, if you design your change as a full mod instead of just editing a few lines then your change will persist when the game is updated.

I want to make a guide for this, since changing the starting lance is one of the most common requests. Not exactly a lot of spare time right now, though.

I had this same issue yesterday (I even have an open thread here) ... I could not find anything wrong in the modified JSON file but it kept me on the infinite loading screen.

Finally, I copied my backup and made a new primary file; copied the changes over and Battletech has worked great ever since.

Hopefully this will work for you too.

I will appreciate such a guide; thank you in advance for taking the time to help the rest of us.

IT was moved back in the 1.6 update when the core unity engine update happened. I don't believe it was a conscious choice by HBS.

Ahh. It's on Stam, so yeah, that ought to work. Last night I gave up and started a campaign with random mechs. That worked fine - 2 Centurions, 2 Commandos, and a Firestarter.

Apparently the issue is solely with the 3 lines I changed to pick my starting lance. No idea why though. I just copy/pasted in the exact changes, leaving no possibility of erasing a comma or whatever. Go figure.

@EmptyPepsiCan
had a similar issue
verified and then pasted in the same thing a second time and it was fine

computers....go figure....sometimes as fickle as wives
