Malthusian thought, causes a -50% increase in colonial migration. Bug? Other wise why research it?

It's a prerequisite tech for Realism, which in turn is a prerequisite for Impressionism, which is a prerequisite for Expressionism.

So, if you want the benefits of these techs, you have to suffer the negatives for Malthusian Thought. Gives you something to think about .....

Now if only the next patch would fix the tech trading loophole, you cannot get the good without the bad. ;)

In case you don't know: The tech trading loophole allows you to trade for techs with other nations for which you don't have the prerequisites yourself. In this case this means that you could get Realism without Malthusian Thought, if you find another nation that has Realism and is prepared to trade it with you.

EDIT: And aggrivating this loophole is the fact that the higher techs ignore the first prerequisite in the chain. So, if you can lay your hands on Realism through trading, you can start researching Impressionism and then Expressionism yourself, without ever having pocessed the initial prerequisite tech.

It's basically the same tech tree loophole that ruined many CIV and CIV2 game, until Firaxis finally plugged the hole with CIV3.

Malthus's ideas encouraged migration to poorly populated colonies, where there were less people and more opportunities for growing food. I don't know why researching it decreases it.

Right. Without this, why would your citizens ever move away from their nice comfortable homes out into the colonies? And if they never move you can never get your state culture in the majority of a colony and you can never make it a state.

So, based on what Malthus really wrote about, and how a POSITIVE increase in colonial migration would be a benefit, (And how do you have a negative "increase"? Is that just a translation issue? Seems like you would use the word "decrease".) that players would actually want, maybe these is a bug and not what was intended and should be reversed?

I agree.... on my 3 week post exams Victoria binge i noticed this problem with Malthus thought... Can some one reverse this... or would it just been that your population will all run off to Canada....?

I fixed this for VIP BUT it is a simple fix. Just go into the culture_tech file and take away the "-" and VOILA ;)

Someone should correct this and tell Memnon about it. I can do it later - I don't have Vicky at work ;)

Why me?

Because if I correct it, it's a mod, just like DR's education fix, so it should be in your Patches/Mods thread :)

True, but although the example was for the culture tech tree, it applies equally to the commerce tech tree. These days I trade with the UK for, for exampe, Business Regulations. It unlocks the other more advanced commerce techs without me having to acquire State & Government in the culture tree, with all it's nasty side effects regarding negative random events.

That really ought not be possible. ;)
