Currently in my game as Sweden i have encountered a really bizarre situation with tech.
at about 1630 I had Naval tech 5 and Land tech 9 and now I have (1690) Naval tech 13
land tech 12. What is the problem?? Well I have been spending ~40 per month on land
tech and only 5-6 on naval tech. I am not the only country with this "sudden Naval
boost". It appears (from the Naval tech graph) that all of the maritime powers have
had equally naval tech gains (same slope). whereas land tech seem sto be reduced to
snails pace for everyone (exampel I am expecting my next land tech in 1716!!!) However my sliders show my next naval tech is due in 1760.. but likely it will 'appear" much sooner.

I previously thought that IGC had tech difficulties but now it appear s1.08 in general seems
to have a royally messed up tech system.. Even if I max land tech it still always seems
to absolutely "crawl". How ar eyou guys getting tech 30+ or even max i will never know
.. LOL

ON funnier side i have been hit 6 .. repeat six times with tah stoopid "unhappiness among
the artisans" that i am perpetually stuck at INFA level 5.. (grr...)

AT this rate my navies will get warp drive before my guys discover flintlocks...

I had a similiar thing happen to me. I was England and Spain had a big naval tech lead over everyone. So I built several naval manufactories and cranked up my naval tech investment. Well, my navel tech line spike upwards (the slope increased) massively. After a while, I passed Spain. :)

But after my lead incresed to a certain point, everyone's (except Poland's and Russia's) slope increased to match mine! Was it because the were afraid of their navies becoming outdated, so they boosted their navel investment? Or, did their naval tech cost decrease because I had already "blazed the trail" for them? Or does the AI cheat?

Your having a higher naval tech than other countries will make it easier for those countries to increase their tech. Also, I think relative costs for naval and army tech levels change so that at some points it is easier to gain naval tech and at other points army tech.

Well, there is this "neighbor Bonus" - not sure how it works, but there is a spillover effect onto your neighbors (or to you if you have lower tech). SO it looks like your neighbors are getting a free ride from your tech investment.

I can see the point as to why others are getting the freebies. but two points are still unclear.
1) how did I get soo many naval advancements so fast considering my extremely low naval spending
2) I was not in the lead in naval tech , and the big jump
in naval tech occurred for almost everyone (except Russia and poland.. they have almost no ports

on the topic of ports.. gee Poland has no port .. its 20 ship navy has sat in the Baltic for 25 years and suffered NO ATTRITION!!! (gee If i wa sto do that I woudl have no navy in matter of months)... can we say CHEAT!

The way to check on your naval investments is to hold the pointer over the navy tech investment slider (or any of them). I've found that the neighbor bonus can be huge. As a matter of fact, playing Brandenburg, I realized that when I eventually got a port, my naval tech level would be just fine since I was getting anywhere from 8-16D "invested" as a result of neighbor bonus.

In general, the overall phenomenon might be neighbor bonus. Everyone gets dragged up the curve.

About that Polish fleet. I don't know, I've seen fleets hang around for ever, but there are often, semi-permanent wars, and a fleet can dock in an allies port.

What is the problem??

That you do not understand how research works in the game.
It's not a bug, it's how it's supposed to work.

Some relative research costs (read more about it in my BETA FAQ)

Lvl - LT - NT
9 - 25 - 50
10 - 25 - 10
11 - 75 - 15
12 - 100 - 10
13 - 75 - 15

total 300 - 100

Thus, between level 9-13 Naval tech is MUCH cheaper to develop.

The reason Land Tech is so expensive between 11-13 is becaurse you are refitting all your land units with muskets.

Correct me if im wrong but ive noticed for every tech level a neighbour has on u, u gain an extra 2gold .

Eg u have level 5 land and ya neighbour has level 7 u gain an extra 4 gold.

OK, that explains the strangeness. I thought it had something to do with inflation. Early in the game, my inflation was growing big time, but when I got to the tech level where you can promote mayors, I started doing that and noticed my research costs went down. I though that was because my inflation was dropping. I also had a negative 30% inflation random event.

Since AI ships don't ever suffer attrition (akin to Triremes in Civ/Civ2) my guess is that the game tries to "compensate" by forcing the fleet into inaction for long periods of time. An advantage countered by a disadvantage of sorts.

Yes, inflation affects research costs too (but it doesn't change the relative cost between naval & land tech)

As I see it the main problem with tech in patch 1.08 is the slow speed in development. The starter says he has level 12 in land tech in the year 1690, witch I think is rather late:confused:

This is just the same problems I have tried to discuss in several posts but no one seemed interested in the topic:)

With this I just would like to give mine full support to Zizka in his complaint about slow tech development.

Mayby it's because it was debated to death a few weeks ago. It's a known bug with later patches and will hopefully be fixed again in 1.09.
Meanwhile Laurent F has tried to fix it in his RealEU mod.

Hey hey, I know it has been discused before, I'v read almost every thread the last months, I hope you noticed the smiley?...:D

Regarding Real Eu; I have quite a few crashes whwn running that so I have given it up
