Prior to getting Holy Fury, I last played CK2 last Saturday/Sunday, it worked fine.

Today after buying Holy Fury I tried to run it and I get the launcher window fine, but after pressing start it starts to load but then crashes.

The exact point is when the loading bar is between about 50% done and it is 'loading events' and about 60% done and it is 'loading graphics'.

I have verified my Steam cache, which I initially thought may have been the issue as it did re-download some corrupted files, but the game still wouldn't launch.

My AV is AVG and CK2 has been on the whitelist for years, and I have double-checked it's still there.

I have switched off all mods, running vanilla still gets the same response.

Found someone else who seemed to have a similar problem to me, carried out the steps that were suggested for them, as below.

Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK2
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add ck2game.exe to the exceptions list/whitelist of your antivirus app
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK2 or Documents CK2 locations, before installing again.

Did all of the above, but sadly the game still fails to run.

I've attached logs, but I'm not certain if the CK2 log is the correct one, if not, let me know and I'll have another go.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I also use AVG, and I tried lots of things and couldn't get it to work.... until, I just turned AVG off, then launched the game. Once the game had started and I began playing, I switched AVG back on.

Now I am able to launch CK2 with AVG on, it is like CK2 had to initialize some files that first time that AVG didn't like. Hope this helps.

I have had this issue previously with AVG, but in this case it's something different. When the problem is AVG it generally won't even launch the game, but I can launch the game and get over half way to loading the main screen.

In the interest of trying every possible fix, especially something as easy as this, I did switch AVG off, but no change.

I am now getting the same problem. Not starting now since the update.
I have turned off my AV, Bitdefender. Still failing. Please help.

Most AV apps don't really get disabled when you turn them off. They are deliberately made hard to disable, as that is what some malware tries to do.

Use Notepad to make a new text file called userdir.txt in the Steam CK2 folder where ck2game.exe is. In that file place a single dot, save and exit. This tells the game to write the user files right there instead of under Documents. If that works and the game now runs, you can replace that dot with any file path you like.

It is almost certainly your AV app then. With BD you need to add the Windows User Documents folder to its Safe Files feature, or whatever they call it.
