Ok, I am trying to play EU2 on an old computer. Unfortunately I do not remember all the spesifications right now, but I can get them if necessary. Mainly, the game should run, run pretty badly, but run.

The installation was easy, the game semed to install just fine. However, attempting to play resulted only in an error message. Appareantly a dll file was missing. As I had Win95 and the file was something ws2-ish, I concluded that I needed to install Winsock2, which turned out to be conviniently placed on the disc.

The Winsock2 install failed as there were no TCP/IP protocol to be found. That made sense, as there is no TCP/IP protocol on the machine, just as there is no cable, ADSL, ISDN, modem or any other means to get online. That might change in the future, but I am not that patient.

As it is, I need a TCP/IP protocol. Not that the protocol will do any of the work it is designed to do, it will just be there so that Winsock2 will install. I tried to install a TCP/IP protocol, but it required me to shamelessly choose the brand of my nonexistant network card, which I do not like to do. In the end, I would have tried it, but it also required my currently misplaced Win95 CD, so I decided to ask here for support, as I had to wait until the CD turned up anyway.

That is, I want a device that convinces Winsock2 that it is alright to be installed. Say some kind of fake TCP/IP protocol, that tells all other applications, especially the Winsock2 installer, that it is a TCP/IP protocol but will fail miserably if you try to use it as a TCP/IP protocol is meant to be used. Right?

Wow!

I'm going to have to get back to you on that one since I'll have to do a bit of research on how one might set that up on a '95 system without the card and....zowee.

Unfortunately I'm out this evening so the soonest opportunity I'll have to go through some of my old reference materials will be tomorrow night. Just wanted you to know that I've seen your question and will see what I can do to help you ASAP.

Of course if anyone else reading this happens to know off the top of their heads... :)

to install winsock2, you need Win95 OSR2 (or release "b"). If you have the original Windows 95 version ("a"), you are out of luck :(

assuming you have Windows 95 OSR2 and assuming you can get your CD, you will need to install a network card, wich you will find under the manufacturer "Microsoft". I can't remember what is the name exactly, but it's something like "dial up adapter". Then you proceed with the installation of TCP/IP and winsock2.

This article might be useful to you for installing the appropriate components...

another tip... when you get a hold on the CD, if you have enough free space on your hard drive, copy it over there.

Create a directory called "WIN95CD" and copy the entire Windows 95 CD in there.

Go to the Registry Editor and open the branch "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup" and find the key called "SourcePath".
Double click on it and change the directory to C:\WIN95CD (or whatever you named it on whatever drive you created it).
In the future, you won't need your CD, except for backup/re-installation purposes as Windows will always look on your HDD for the files it need.
