Firewall

I Dont Know Much Abaout Firewalls, Only That It Needs To Be Off When Hosting (at Leest My Firewal Needs To).

I Have Also A Simuler Question As You, Do I Have Problems With My Firewall? I Have 20 Mb Up/down, But For Players Far Away, It Feels Like 56 Kb? Is That Firewall Problem?

Which version of Zone Alarm do you run? I've got 4.0 and it does funny things with internet playing (like chosing to shut it up when it sees it fine).
Putting the internet zone security level to "medium" has helped, but you may not wish to leave that for much time.

I think that you are missing the point of a firewall if you feel that you have to turn it off completely in order to play HOI2 (or any other internet game). In doing so you open yourself up to many hacks/windows exploits etc that are out there.

Think of a firewall as a watch dog that you train to allow the good people into your house and to keep the bad ones out.

Learning how to "Train" a firewall to allow good users in (by opening ports that you know these users are trying to use to contact you) and closing ports to allow the bad users out is the real answer to your problem.

Now somewhere in that sticky that you read were a list of ports that you have to open in order for HOI2 multiplayer to communicate properly. Somewhere in your firewall configuration there should be a way to open these specific ports. Figuring that out is the hard part. I am 99% sure that Zone Alarm Pro has this functionality.

There should be some help files associated with Zone Alarm that shows you how to open/close ports. Basically you should keep all of your ports closed and only open the ones that are critically necessary.

This may or may not be of help to you, unfortunately I do not use Zone Alarm so I cannot help you much with the configuration.

Best of luck

Corey

Open Zone alarm - Program control - Programs Tab - add - browse your HOI2 directory to find hoi2.exe.

In the program list change the blue ???? to VVVV in order to give it internet and server access.

Find Microsoft Direct Play helper and Microsoft Direct Play Server in the same list and change the questionmarks to "V"'s too there.

Everytime you patch HOI you need to regive HOI2.exe access.
