Hello everyone,
This is Paul Gautier, Art Director for Airport Simulator: First Class.
We're back at our articles on the creation of our next Long Haul Airline. I hope you enjoyed the revelation of this detail!
Last time I presented the 3D modeling of aircraft, but this time we'll be talking about the buildings you can place in your airport.
I'll introduce you to the concepts I've been working on. Then we'll see how these are created in 3D for integration into the game.
In previous articles, I've shown you my mood board, as well as a first concept for a decoration based on Singapore Changi Airport's (SIN) iconic fountain.
Singapura, the airline you have chosen, will be a luxurious, sober, and chic Airline. It brings to your airport several gardens, rivers, and plant decorations in reference to the symbols of the city of Singapore and the decoration of Changi Airport. After all, this is the national airline!
Here are several sketches that echo these ideas:
In the center of Singapore are gardens with metal trees, which light up at night.
We thought it would look great in your terminal.
Here's a spa.
Changi Airport is famous for offering many activities to pass the time during a stopover, including this one, and even has a huge swimming pool with a jacuzzi.
So we wanted to make a small building that took up this idea. At the entrance, you can recognize the mythological creature that symbolizes the city: the merlion.
Finally, we wanted to explore a new chic bar design.
It has the Art Deco inspirations found in some of the city's very private lounges, such as the bar at Parkview Square in Singapore.
During the concept phase, there are discussions with the game designers about the size and floor space of the buildings.
We also decide on the different services the buildings will provide.
Then I hand it over to the 3D Artist.
Hello, I'm Mathis Marchal, nice to meet you. And I'm in charge of turning concepts into reality!
First of, I analyze the concept Paul gives me, to understand its volumes and structure.
I also pay attention to the different shapes and surfaces that are requested, to see if any have been used in previous elements. The aim is to unify the artistic direction of the game. This involves grass, wood, metal; or various objects: seats, counters… as it need to be of the same dimensions.
I then create the 3D mesh.
Finally, I bring it to life with a texture! To do this, the 3d object you see must first be unfolded (i.e. laid flat) so that we can create the texture.
The same step as with the shapes is often needed. To see if any kind of surfaces as already been used previously in the game.
While I'm at it, Paul and I go back and forth on the final details. Visually, we end up with what you see in the game.
In addition, some buildings may require animations or visual effects.
Once these have been added, it's ready to be integrated into the game!
Singapura is coming along nicely, and we'll be able to release it with the LH update in the summer.
It will be accompanied by another LH airline, which we will soon be presenting.
