Old Archaeology didn't really have branching narratives - we faked it in a couple of places with flags, but it always had to collapse down as the stages progressed. Rifts are much more powerful from the content design perspective. Flowcharts instead of lines.
It seems like a small change, but it changes the experience from passively reading a novel to one where you have more agency.
