It always troubled me that the English couldnt start with English names but only the modern or norman variations of them. As the letter Eth wasnt in the game, so while you could add it in when editing the files in the game theyd show up as blank spots.
So just a little request for the sequel, could it have Eth? Yogh and thorne too if it comes to it, I think ash is already in. But anyway, the lack of ð is the one that always bugged me.
And surely itd be a pretty easy thing to include right?

I'd say so, I know Veld has an excellent Before the Conquest mode. I don't know of specific letters and spellings though.

Technically speaking, the vast majority of kings used Latin names in this period.

Most of us are not using keyboards capable of typing obsolete letters, nor are we particularly willing to switch keyboard layouts, and this would make things like searching or even sorting that much more complicated.

And wait until the ethno-nationalist whinging starts. "Waah, waah, they get their eth and we don't even get our squiggly octopus letter! It's really easy to say, it's sort of a 'w'-meets-the-sound-of-chewing-on-tinfoil type of deal.'

No, I say Paradox should instead be spending the time on improving the actual game.

It's no big deal. Eth can be indicated, as was indicated, with a th or a d.

I think they should since they're including Anglo-Saxon England. English language superiority!
Also, it's pronounced "thorn" when in the alphabet.
Actually, I don't really see a problem in including any old Latin-based letter, I won't be able to pronounce the names correctly, but it doesn't really matter. :)

...but not Greek ones? Blatant Western-Eurocentrism!

You're right brother, for the sake of progress and togetherness the games text should be instead represented by vague pictographs, this way anyone from any culture should not feel left out or offended and all can enjoy Crusader Kings II.

greek is a different alphabet, arabic is a different alphabet, eth is in the same so its not comparable. same with runes. Its a english latin alphabet letter.
and as you don't type much in in paradox games, aside from province re-naming in EU3 how is the keyboard not having it without combinations an issue?

and anyway, its not talking about 'Western-Eurocentrism' as its giving england what europe already has. The for the romance languages the game already has all the accents and little lines and dots which aren't on the keyboards either mind you. so its no so great a step to add in the most important to the english.

The issue is, the game becomes unreadable for the mainstream. No offense to those with other alphabets, but I don't want to fight against Emir squiggly-line and Emir dot-wiggle.

Also, Arabic and Hebrew is written backwards compared to Western languages.

Many langages and layouts have accents. All French layouts, Canadian standard, Spanish, some others... Besides, it's not new letters, it is an accent. All main fonts (read: not those use find only on the internet) have accents. I don't think it's the case with eth, and after a small random sample of standard Word fonts, it was in none (though there was a D with a stroke in all of them).

According to Wikipedia, eth is apparently used only in Icelandic and... Faroese. Yeah.

Though just supporting it would be fine, if some developpers have some free time, after hours...

No one is seriously suggesting including another alphabet, just the extended Latin one. Paradox have used extended Latin characters in all their other titles and I don't see why they should stop. "Thorn" was used in English writing even after the first dictionary, not very often by then but still used.
I can't see why Paradox would drop a letter out of names except for aesthetic reasons.

which is completely unrelated, this is the same alphabet and the same language, not a different one. So it wouldnt render it unreadable or raise any such issues

I doubt anyone would really understand how a persons name is really pronounced, if it's spelled like the OP suggested.
I'd personally be happy if they stick with normal latin alphabet, as I like to know what my guy's name really is..

The question is do you want the development team to spend their time working on this or put their effort into other areas. I would think for the majority of gamers this is very low priority when compared to other areas.

Yeah, you're right, there are so many more important letters to code for. I always find "S" is a tricky one, it's all the way over to the left of the keyboard, it could take weeks to implement!
